If Dosbox doesn't work, you can always use VDMSound for a DOS-emulator. Check the second page of this thread for the addy.

I just saw Age of Wonders 1 and 2 together yesterday for $10 CDN. I've played 1 and heard that 2 was even better. Has anyone tried 2? I did find that when I played 1, I was always doing the auto combat thing.

KotoR is my favourite game!
It is so good at graphic and sound, I have played it as a light site, dark site and with all magic party. The characters all have their own story they are gradually willing to tell you. Particulary Bastila has an erotic face and cool voice! (in the German version at least) The fights are very hard with all magic, but if you level up correctly, they'll become fun yet stay still very hard at the end of the game. e.g.: You have to fight some pretty tough Mandalorians. But with an all magic party they have no chance. You don't even have to bother to pull your light swords. You can swivel them through the air via spells (I forgot the name of the spells - force wave) You can pause and think about your next steps. Besides, you can have a romance with Bastila. But it is very difficult to get her! She has a very strong personality!

Isn't Age of Wonder a strategy game?
Does it have any rpg elements, I mean such as developing a character? Ok, it seems to be a combination of both strategy and rpg, as you can see here from the customer reviews: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg...games&n=468642 [ 09-19-2004, 06:33 AM: Message edited by: Micha369 ]

I like both, Strategy and RPG. That's why I asked. The best for strategy so far would have to be Disciples 2, for me.

How old is this game Disciples 2?
Is there a test or a rating available in the net? Are there help homepages and forums?

D2 is about 2-3 years old. I saw it for $10cdn at Zellers about a month ago. I should have bought a second one for someone. It's almost RPGish anyway since you never have more that 6 in your army and they all gain lvls, like the hero leading them.
Check out Strategyfirst.com. There's lots of other interesting games by them too!

Well, if strategy games are ok, too, then you should *definitely* try Master of Magic. The king of fantasy strategy games, by a fair margin, IMO. Incredibly complex and entertaining. The more recent Age of Wonders games have tried to capture the spirit of this game, but they are far more limited in scope and lack the Civilization-style empire building aspects that make MoM so great.
Yeah, there are a few super strategies that will make the game "too easy" (hint A: just choose high men, it costs you nothing; hint B: a stack of 9 paladin units; hint C: several stacks of 9 paladin units), but try to detain from using them and instead try experimenting with new strategies. You will always find new ways of playing this game! It has ugly graphics. It is an old game. You can probably find it on an abandonware site. I have the original diskettes, but at least one of them is defective already. To get the slightest idea of just HOW complex the game is, see the FAQ: http://www.the-spoiler.com/STRATEGY/...f.magic.1.html P.S. I never play High Men these days, they are too easy... Seclists
You have named one of my top 5 games. Spooky thing is, as I said in an earlier thread (Wiz8 Enhancement), found it in one of my cupboards (CD version). When I get a chance I must get it to work in Dosbox. I also liked Paladins, which magic realms did you like? I liked Nature and White. That town portal or whatever it was to get troops quickly to other town trouble spots (Nature) and all the great White enhancements for your troops. Once I got the hero Torin and buffed him up I was unstoppable. Edit: Oh, by the way, I've still got the strategy guide and think that this, together with the guide for the first Master of Orion game, are the best strategy guides ever written (IMHO of course). Edit2: Just tried Seclists' lnk and it has a section devoted to running it on XP. Will try tonight. Also, the FAQ author agrees with me about the strategy guide. What a perceptive young man! Quote:
(I am speaking in the past tense because I nowadays try to experiment with new strategies and playing styles.) There were relatively few spells that were "must" for this playing style. Actually, I would only need: -Some means of engaging flying enemies (paladins can't fly!) - Web (N) was my preferred spell for this, even though it didn't work against shadow demons (they are non-corporeal and cannot be webbed). Then again, their distance attacks could hardly even scratch my paladins. So I just hit "Auto" and waited; eventually they would run out of magic attacks and engage the paladins in melee -> my paladins got to counterattack and quickly tore the shadow demons into pieces. I could also have used Flight, but then I would either have had to 1) pay upkeep for every flying paladin unit or 2) separately cast it on every paladin unit at the beginning of every combat. Blehh! I would rather just web the Sky Drakes, Great Drakes and Demon Lords and hit "Auto". Against the less powerful flying creatures, I would just wait until they run out of ammo and start meleeing the paladins (...and die). You get the picture. Now you know why I do NOT play high men/paladins any more. It gets boring too quickly! -Some means of traversing water. I preferred floating islands that I cast as required and quickly dismissed (remember, I had those powerful Myrror nodes and Node Mastery, so the mana cost was not an issue). I disliked building ships as well as using unit-specific enhancements that require upkeep. However, a hero with Wind Walking and plus-to-speed artifacts makes an attractive alternative to floating islands. PS., I envy you for the strategy guide. I missed it completely and was peeved for years. Any chance you could, ahem, scan it (all 400-odd pages of it) into a pdf or something? EDIT: Oh, one neat trick I always used. If played a Wizard with L(ife) magic, I always picked Rjak's portrait for my character. And if I played a Wizard with (D)eath magic, I picked Ariel's (wasn't that her name?). Why? Because then the computer couldn't pick those wizards (that would have had no spells to offer to me). [This probably made absolutely no sense to those don't have a lot of MoM experience, sorry.] [ 09-23-2004, 09:10 AM: Message edited by: seclists ] |
