Well, there is this wonderful thing called peer pressure. Public preaching is disallowed, but people do still go around and spread the word among their friends, collegues, etc... Then there are the promotional pamplets and advertisements. People are still allowed to preach their religion, they just do it discreetly. It is generally more peaceful than a public rally too. Singapore may not be as free as the Western countries, but for all that I don't feel as if I'm living in some hell-hole or something. So we don't enjoy the same religious freedom? Big deal.
I have talked to a number of Hindus and I have found them on the whole considerably more tolerant and even appreciative of other faiths. We can do with a bit more of that.

But seriously ask the Navajho (sp?) that served in WWII if they love the 4th of July, or any of the other native peoples that have contributed to this country. [ 07-04-2002, 12:14 PM: Message edited by: John D Harris ]

That's not tolerance KT. Neither is the hatred Hindus in India have shown towards Christians (killed) and Muslims (Mosques burned) by Hindus nor the Hindus seeking to create Hindustan, a Fundamentalist Hindu state in India. How dare a Dalit be president eh? Can't touch him.... Have you been follwing the "brink of nuclear war" stuff between Hindu Indians and Muslim Pakistanis or is that just me? Regarding social freedoms, it's widely known that Singapore is more restrictive than other nations. HOWEVER, you have interpreted that negatively. Did I not say I love Singapore? I've only stated that on this board about half a million times. I have defended the governments choices to westereners here aghast. In the microcosm that is Singapores history the choices make very good sense. So ease up on the defensive rhetoric KT (over a number of posts now.) You're amongst friends.
