C'mon Bilqis! A three year old child and a 40 year old adult. Who's had the greater oportunity to gain knowledge through experiences and apply that knowledge in the way we call wise?

A wise youth is one who has maximised learning from minimal experience and a foolish old man, one who has learnt little from a plethora of days alive. No, age does not mean wisdom, but a lot can be learned from listening to those that have walked paths before us. One thing I've noticed about the Singaporean culture, is that they respect age and the wisdom gained through it, far more than western youth obsessed culture.

Also (you got me on a roll Bilqis, Wah! ) within an individuals life, if one is not relatively wiser at 27 or 50 than they were when they were 10 or 12. Wouldn't there be a problem?

You really are on a roll! (need a smiley for 'wide-eyed-wonder')

I am always happy to hear of cultures where age and wisdom are respected. Too often in the West (in my experience) we shunt our older folk off behind the scenes and don't take advantage of the rich texture of life-experience they have to offer us. I've spent many an hour with senior family and friends, who taught me the value of experience. It's truly amazing what you can gain from really paying attention and giving a little of yourself.

So, Yorick, does the Singaporan culture venerate the elders as some Chinese cultures do? Or is it different?

Yes. The Senior Minister here is the same guy that tried and failed merging Singapore with Malaysia, and that guided Singapore towards prosperity. Though he has no real official capacity his words are heeded and given much respect.

I've decided though that I can't in good conscience continue to blanketly refer to Singaporeans as Chinese. It would be like someone calling me British.
One of my new friends is fourth or fifth generation Singaporean, and besides speaking a very different accent of Mandarin (influenced by English and Malay), their culture - though similar, is markedly different from "The Middle Kingdom".
