I've never needed to swear on this board, however I do use lesser swear words, ie, a word that is probably as close to a swear word as you can get.....

Damn, Crap etc. However, if I was told that my language was inappropriate, I would stop!

Do some people not?

LOL. Fer sure, some people do not. Hence this thread.

Ziroc, I can sympathyse at your cursing during a game. Galadria has had to take me to task more than once when our four-year-old picks up some expression I have shouted at some lich or dragon. Ooh, I got in bad trouble when he addressed the cat with the participle of the word that this thread is about.

LOL Attalus!!

Well, not having any children, I haven't had to worry about that...but I rarely have to censor myself, even during games. I usually say something like, "Oh, you total BUTT!" or "@-hole" (expanded). I rarely use the f-word as spoken, though.

Saz, I don't either. Now. P.S., I sang the "Barbarian's Birthday Dirge" (part of it) while washing dishes last night, and had to dodge a spoon. I don't think Galadria liked the part about

They stole your sword, your gold, your house,
Took your sheep but not your spouse,
Happy Birthday. [Hunh!] Happy Birthday. [Hunh!]

As long as you didn't get down to the one that said

"Burn then r*** by firelight,
Add some romance to your life!"

You probably wouldn't be standing today.

Cheers,

Seems to me our sacrosanct vocabulary for those truly heated emotional times has shrunk as these cuss words have come into more common usage. Among professionals, I've noticed that the language used commonly would have made sailors blush 20-30 years ago.

I'm all for having a word or set of words that really are "fighting words" and meant to be used only when things are so heated or emotional (didn't someone on this post mention Sept. 11). I admit I'm guilty of occassionaly using these words as normal nouns/verbs/adverbs/adjectives but I nevertheless think that we'd be better off if we didn't - just so we'd have the words to pull out when we REALLY meant it.

That said, I think the f-word is the one word that is still reserved by manny for the penultimate occassions. A few others may fall into this category, notable a certain c-word that nearly all women are willing to maim you for using. But, to state it too verbosely once again, I think it's still noticeable because it's still the one word that's "the worst" and used only as a reserve by many folks.

I have no children that I know of (sorry....I'll go RIGHT after I post this ) and my flatmate is a guy and the same age as myself (19). Swearing is used without thought in our flat. I remember when my mother came to visit me for a day trip, and we had to be really careful not to swear. Since then I've tried to swear a LOT less. It seems to be habit forming...
