Which is exactly why I noted that this whole tempest originates from prejudice. As long as some limey was running it, no one cared, but put an arab at the helm and we go nuts. [/QUOTE]Oh come one now! That's a crock. There are enough holes in the deal to warrant rational skeptikism. The implication that if "your are against the port deal you are racist" is simply wrong.

The race card is an over-played weak hand. So I raise the race card with another over-played hand, but one not as weak: The patriot card. Is it patriotic to favor a company owned by a foriegn government over seeking alternatives closer to home? Particularly with regards to something as important to our security and prosperity as the ports on our shores.

Firstly it wasn't owned by the British gov't, Secondly we've seen enough allegations of graft to raise suspicions that the deal was pushed through because of favors to the Bush family.

I'd be perfectly happy with legislation stating that foreign governments can't control US ports, not arab countries, not arab businesses, but no foreign governments period.

So your answer then is to make the govt take over the operation of every terminal in America becuase theres no way you can throw out the foriegn companies currently operating terminals otherwise.

You don't even want to think about what this would cost in dollars to buy out every lease holder currently operating and even less about the cost in efficiency if you let the govt operate the terminals as opposed to private enterprise.

no, merely to buy out the contracts of ports controlled by foreign governments not independent companies based in foreign countries, geez you don't read very well do you. There are alot of US businesses based in the bahamas to avoid US taxes, even if it's just a mailbox, they are considered "foreign business" but are not controlled by a foreign government, even China nowadays doesn't have every business operating within it nationalized and I have no problem with private citizens or even public companies owning and performing port operations, but a company set up by a foreign government, operated and directly answerable to a foreign government is a security problem, even if only for the extra vigilance it will cause security at the port authority.

It's easy to see why people might suspect race is an issue here, even if there are legitimate security concerns...after all, they probably have tighter security than we do if our borders are anything to go by

On the other hand, Lou Dobbs broke a story yesterday about the Bush's ties to this deal. Apparently W's brother (Jeb?) is involved in selling stock related to this deal recently. I wish I caught Lou last night, but alas and alack the Demons and Ogres in Dire Maul needed sweeping.
Torpedoing this deal because of alleged political favours by Geedubya is much more valid than torpedoing it because it's a foreign government/company running it IMO. Less hypocritical too.

And what exactly does that show them to be "all about"??

Other than a company involved in global container shipping?
