The following is from the BLOG of a US Diplomat stationed somewhere in the region hit by the Tsunami. A first hand report as it were.
Day 9 of the tsunami crisis. I know I had promised to lay off the UN for a bit . . . but I can't. As one reader commented on a previous Diplomad posting on the UN, "it's like watching a train wreck" -- you know it's horrible, but you've just got to look at it. In this part of the tsunami-wrecked Far Abroad, the UN is still nowhere to be seen where it counts, i.e., feeding and helping victims. The relief effort continues to be a US-Australia effort, with Singapore now in and coordinating closely with the US and Australia. Other countries are also signing up to be part of the US-Australia effort. Nobody wants to be "coordinated" by the UN. The local UN reps are getting desperate. They're calling for yet another meeting this afternoon; they've flown in more UN big shots to lecture us all on "coordination" and the need to work together, i.e., let the UN take credit. With Kofi about to arrive for a big conference, the UNocrats are scrambling to show something, anything as a UN accomplishment. Don't be surprised if they claim that the USS Abraham Lincoln is under UN control and that President Lincoln was a strong supporter of the UN. Maybe watching the UN flounder is not like watching a train wreck; perhaps it's more akin to watching an Ed Wood movie or reading Maureen Dowd or Margo Kingston -- so horrible, so pathetic, that it transforms into a thing of perverse beauty. The only problem, of course, is that real people are dying. I hope soon to return to my habitual corner of the Far Abroad . . . far, far away from the UN. UPDATE: More on "The UNcredibles": WFP (World Food Program) has "arrived" in the capital with an "assessment and coordination team." The following is no joke; no Diplomad attempt to be funny or clever: The team has spent the day and will likely spend a few more setting up their "coordination and opcenter" at a local five-star hotel. And their number one concern, even before phones, fax and copy machines? Arranging for the hotel to provide 24hr catering service. USAID folks already are cracking jokes about "The UN Sheraton." Meanwhile, our military and civilians, working with the super Aussies, continue to keep the C-130 air bridge of supplies flowing and the choppers flying, and keep on saving lives -- and without 24hr catering services from any five-star hotel . . . . The contrast grows more stark every minute. # posted by Diplomad @ 9:25 AM Comments (109) | Trackbacks (4) |

While the UN collects money and makes headlines....US and Australian troops (in their own uniforms not UN uniforms) have been busy saving lives and feeding people. Aid is flowing into the region from these two nations, while the UN attempts to work out a feeding schedule for visiting dignitary Kofi Annan.
Now they're gettin somewhere For those anxious to take offense. This is a rip at the UN and not Europeans. Im sure the Europeans are as charitable as any people, however the UN seems to be the EU preffered method of dealing with things and the general EU populace does not seem to understand just how ineffective and useless the UN really is in emergency situations. Latest word from the front lines in the Tsunami zone...The USA, JApan, Australia and India (India has this a bit easy as it is in the area and is part of the disaster area) have people on the ground helping people. The UN has scheduled meetings and is hoping to have a plan within the week.
I hope the EU nations do not wait for the UN to get a plan and draw up a resolution. |

Some may notice a rather large number of posts by me detailing what the US and the coalition nations are doing...this is to counter the spectacular lack of fair reporting by US and Euro news agencies and the misinformation spewed by the UN.

We get it Ray - you hate the UN and you hate the EU. That's OK - I am not all that keen on that draft dodger you have in the Whitehouse.
Please remember : Some dogs are brown with white spotches Dubbya has a dog ergo it must be brown with white splotches. That is what you would have us come to believe about the UN isn't it? For the record - our news organisations here (at least the conservative news networks that I watch in OZ) are quite complimentary about the UN actions AND the US actions. The glass can be half full - it doesn't have to be half empty every time you talk about the UN.

I do hate and despise the corrupt institution that the UN has become....the Idea was a bright shining thing...the reality is a tarnished base metal illusion, filled with Lies, Graft, Corruption, Sex Scandals, criminal neglect and incompetency. As for the Draft Dodger.... I wasn't too thrilled with Bill Clinton either...all I can say is that I didn't vote for him either time. [ 01-04-2005, 08:33 AM: Message edited by: MagiK ] |
