I'll try some of these.
But if I Portal out without killing the King, can I finish the quests and come back later to kill him?

Once I went into the rift while being hostile to both the normal rapax and the templars, and the battle which I got nearly immediately after going in there involved about 40-50 rapax, most of whom were templars who each turn cast either noxius fumes, fireball or whipping rocks, and it was only because of my bard's heal all instrument that no one died from the party. So in more recent parties I try the more cunning approach and go in after becoming a templar.

Except for the first game, I always go to the Away Camp as a Templar. First attempt, tho, in that first game, I tried to wipe them out and got close. Didn't know what I was doing and was too weak.
Solo Update - Got through the Templars, lev 21 and 19. The minor trick was to move over to the other side (left) of the rocks going down the hill and let them come to us. Yep, terrain. The idea of letting Drazic and/or Rodan die helped alot, too. They managed to survive and help, but I made them heal themselves, mostly. (Damn, starting to sound like the game...) Long battle. Since I had a short breather in between, I also rearranged the potions they were carrying to max survival. It's now Fishhawk and RFS against the castle (again). They barely have a problem in fighting the 'Pax. (I left RFS at the T'Rang transporter while doing the Alliance quest. Makes it easy to get him back.) Two things, um, make that three: A Faerie can use Fang. (not in my game "but it's important to know!", still lugging the non-Ninja armor just in case) RFS can change professions and wear all sorts of armor, has anyone done this? Is it worth it? He's a good killer now. Lev 25. There is an item called a Garland of Roses, AC =3, HP regen = 1, Restoration power 5, 3 charges, restricted to fighter types. I don't recall getting this before, have you? Next stop is AP after disarming the bomb (should have done it as a Templar, but it works as a plan to fight to get there as well). Hope you all are enjoying the game as much as I. Zig.

Yeh, worthless at this point. The Faerie has her CoC and the android needs nothing. RFS has the Cloak of Perception. Although it has one less AC then Cloak of Many Colors (and less element protection) it has a +20 senses. We can always get the CoMC at Ferro's. We have an Ivory Blade and Vampire Chain waiting for us, but they too would be useless with this party.

You don't have to kill the king or anyone at the away camp. These days, I generally do the rescue just before heading to the Peak, so I have no need to return to the Rapax castle for anything at Ferro's.
Basically, I see the king, get the key, unlock the cages, recruit Drazic and Rodan, and portal out to Z'Ant. Works real well and is a great time-saver. Of course, if you're feeling bloodthirsty, you can stay and fight the Rapax. But you don't have to if you don't want to; there is no in-game effect. You also can't go back to the camp after placing the artifacts. You need to carry at least two of the three doodads for the camp to appear. So better get em before heading off to the Peak if that's what you want. |

Thanks, Nightowl2, always wondered about that. One of the 2 rescuees say we have to kill the king. What do they know! It was also interesting to me to go to Yamir first instead of Z'Ant. Different dialog on both ends. I used the advice given earlier in this post of going straight to the Umpani house instead of fighting your way up there.

Yeah, Rodan tells you that. Silly me, I listened to him the first time and had a heck of a time! Next game, I just popped out and everything was fine, so after that, I didn't bother with the king. Could be that was Yet Another Unfinished Subplot of the game.
It doesn't matter much whether you see Z'ant or Yamir first, unless the T'rang have caught on to your double-agent business. Then you do have to go to the Umpani first. |
