Here's something to try to get spider silk that has absolutely no basis in fact or reality, but I figure you guys are so desperate you'll try anything.

In my first game, I too went through Trynton AND every inch of Mt. Gigas without getting spider silk, although I didn't have a faerie at the time, so 'twas no biggie to me.

For my restart, I made a faerie bishop, and wanted that faerie plate very very badly. So I was very careful on my first trip through Trynton to pay close attention to any spiders I fought.

There was a group of 3 giant spiders as a set encounter in the lower part of the tree, which I killed very quickly before they even got an attack in (they're very low level creatures), and none of them left spider silk.

Later on, in Upper Trynton, there was another set encounter with 2 giant spiders in one of the "houses". Thinking that this was my last chance for a set encounter (it was), I tried something on a whim. I set everybody in my party to defend, and sat there and waited until one of the spiders cast its web at me. One of the spiders was around the corner and not in my line-of-sight, so it didn't do anything. After I got webbed (everybody resisted), I walked in and slaughtered both creatures.

Sure enough, the one that cast its web left a spider silk, while the one that didn't, didn't.

This is a purely anectodal analysis, and I never spent any time to corroborate my theory. In fact, you guys have probably slaughtered so many spiders that you probably have enough evidence to shoot this theory to high heaven.

But still, might be worth a try...next time you face spiders, simply stand there for several rounds and make the little critters shoot out all the spider silk they can.

On another note, in my first game I had an interesting experience with the Spirit Staff. When I first faced the 3 Oak saplings in the room adjacent to the 7th bough, my party was only 7-8th level, and it was very tough. I finally pulled it off, and one of them left a spirit staff on the ground. Unfortunately, 2 of my guys had died, and after getting everything in the room, I decided that it wasn't enough of a reward to justify two res's, so I reloaded and moved on, knowing that I would need to come back later after doing whatever it was I needed to do in Marten's Bluff.

When I fought that battle later on at 11-12th level, there was no staff. Unfortunately it didn't even dawn on me until later that this staff is what Antone was talking about, so I continued on. It was a real shame, too, because out of all the items Tony makes, that staff was what I most wanted for that party (with my new party, I fought a random encounter near the zoo with 4 willow saplings, and wouldn't you know they left a staff just like that...'course I now have a much more range-oriented party, and have no use for a good staff...go figure .

My point here is that I actually experienced a situation where a set encounter with monsters that potentially have the dropsies DID change what they dropped when I fought them multiple times. However, in this instance I had left the map and come back much later. So exiting and reloading the map may be required, and waiting for in-game time to pass may be necessary as well.

If there are set encounters with spiders in Mt. Gigas or elsewhere (anybody know of any?), this might be something to try (fight battle, reload saved game in a different map, reload map and try again...tedious, but you guys are probably used to that).

Oops, remembered one more thing dealing with dropsies. In the Trynton temple where you get the vines, there are 4 or 5 tree sprites in there as a set encounter. I reloaded and fought this battle several times with my new party, in the hopes that I could get a spirit staff out of it (hey, they're wood spirits . Even though I wasn't reloading the map, I found that what they drop DID vary randomly ('tis a shame, too...in my first game one of them dropped a sprite dagger, which would have been neat for my faerie to have). They almost always left some darts, and some would randomly leave some faerie dust or a potion or whatnot. So again, this is evidence that creature dropsies can be chosen randomly after the battle (although this didn't involve a special item like spider silk or a staff). If you can save your game just before entering combat with some random spiders, you might try fighting them several times to see what happens.

Hopefully this gives you a few specific things to try and break up the monotony a bit...

you know what i have been doing? and this is so desperate. i am trying to teach the spiders that they NEED (on a deep emotional level) to give me silk.

okay. dumb idea. so, lets try our charge routine again. we all run into their group and scream our battlecry "Silk or Die!"

if that doesn't scare the snot out of the spiders, well, i'll just keep webbing them. i know they have teeny tiny little brains, but maybe.... just maybe they will get the hint. web? silk? web? ohhhh! silk!

okay maybe not!

i thought about psyching them out, but they have such teeny brains, waddaya think?

check it out!

"everybody of the eight leg persuasion!! listen up!! we DON'T need your stinkin' silk! neener, neener, neener!!!" ::sticks her tongue out in the general direction of trynton:: "pfffttt! go soak your heads!"

sound convincing? maybe if we wave our spears a bit and make big gesticulations? hah? hah? good idea, huh? right then. okay, here we goes! ::frazzled out group of girls go traipsing up to higher boughs::

Don't know why I'm posting this, as you will all hate me. But I just passed through Trynton the other night with my first party. After crossing the bridge just into the city (still on the ground after leaving the Arnika-Trynton road), I ran into 5 giant spiders or whatever. 4 out of 5 dropped a silk

I know that's not what you wanted to hear..but my lone fairy alchemist will be grateful.

Didn't find a single one up in the tree's, even though we fought a TON of spiders there. And you'll be happy to note I screwed up and sold my 2 oak staffs to the merchant. I haven't been back to see if I can rebuy one so I can give it to Antone.
