What was that? I heard something about food and went into a daze...
It's amazing what pizza will do to a student. Even bad pizza. For plain cheese pizza, I'll go as far the anthropology of the 1940's. For each topping, you get another decade of theory that I'm willing to help with. ![]() |

I used to have dreadies. Yes, they stunk, and yes, they were dirty. Didn't realise just how dirty until i had them cut off(or was it hacked? ) I had lathe swathing and bits of metal all through them. Never again.

I think dreadlocks are nasty. I will look down on someone who wears them. Chewy, that may make me racist or prejudiced, or whatever. I'm fine with that. It ain't illegal.

That's okay TL, we all have faults.
I've polled three dreadlocked friends these last few days and none of them care what other people think or what wrong generalizations they make. They all feel quite sorry for people who judge them by their hairstyle.

Ugly is ugly. Why anyone would choose to look like a dirty ratty person is beyond me. What do they like about dreads? The fact they don't have to clean them? They don't look cool.
I think Sever's post is more convincing than your defense of your friends. You don't even tell us how it can be true that they are washable. |

It's hair. Have you ever touched a dreadlock? Obviuosly not. Even wound close together it is still soft and pourous. Anyway, Truth is I had Dreads for a while about 15 years ago. They never stank and were easy to wash with good old Suave. Anyone who claims their hairs stinks probably didn't wash it. Ugly, Beauty all in the eye of the beholder. As far as I know, dreadlocks were originally used by Holy Men in India as a sign of devotion to their God/s. The Rastafarians of Jamaica appropriated it in a similar way to display and carry out devotion to theirs. It has since been adopted by other African cultures around the world, and then as fashion.
Why would anyone want them? For many it is religious, like Seikhs not cutting their hair, or Hasidic Jews wearing their clothes. For others it's just fashion. It's a simple fact that they can be washed and kept clean. It's also a simple fact that some people like to pour bong water in them and like the smell. I've known and know many people with dreadlocks. Some stink (to me), some smell 'peppery' which I quite like but others can't stand, and most just smell like 'normal' hair. African, Caucasian, Asian, across the board. I think you have to consider your appearance when applying for particular jobs, but then I've also experienced prejudice and bigotry over having clean, brushed and well maintained long hair. I've always been against the idea many people seem to have, that the style of my hair determines my skills and ability. Sometimes I like to have long hair, sometimes short. "Western" society should grow up and start looking at the people underneath the shell. You may ask "If you really want that job etc... what's so important? Why not just conform?" Why not indeed... |
