Graphics-card wise...well, a good one that will run Oblivion with most things turned on is about $200.

That brings the total up to:

$ 40 RAM (for 512MB, $100 for 1 GB)
200 CPU
100 Motherboard
200 Graphics Card

$ 540 US

which is quite a bit shy of your $1000 US

But, you may have to replace your power supply.
Wow, a good return for a lot cheaper than I expected. Now of course, since I'm in Canada things will be more expensive but that's why I gave approximately how much I have in American $$$.
Why might I have to change the power supply?

New processors, motherboards, and graphics cards eat up more power. I'm not real sure what the cutoff is...after all, I'm running four hard drives, which is a bit more than the average user...and as such, has a 500 Watt power supply.

I really don't know what a single-processor, single hard-drive, single graphics card system needs, powerwise...but it'd be a shame to fry a power source because of not knowing!

Hmmm, not too bad for a computer that is 4 months old. Another two months and it will be obsolete, lol.

I bought it as the maximum gaming machine that still fits my minimal budget

Hmm, ok. Do you think I'd be safe to just take it in to some place tell them how much I'm willing to spend and ask them to give me the best system they possibly can? I'm not exactly well knowledged in most of this stuff, only knowing real info about RAM and memory and a bit about graphics cards. Do you think that they would be able to set me up with something?

Ok, my PC sucks. To join Sir G in asking, what would be a good place to start improving?

*hopes the answer is not "everything"*

Sir G...I think you'd be better off asking around where you live about that

Personally, in Kentucky, I'd rather work on one myself, as 1)it's cheaper and 2)every time I'm near a computer shop in this state, I feel like I'm going to get ripped off.

That's not necessarily true everywhere else.

I'll say this again, so that everyone hears...Not everyone needs the fastest computer in the world. Neither of mine are the fastest...and that's okay with me, because between them, they can do almost everything I need them to do. Computer "speed" is about what you want a computer to do.

And Ivellis, you could use RAM and a graphics card. You should run CPU-Z (above) to find out what your "graphic interface" is...that way, you can know what kind of card to buy.

If it comes up blank...well, I hate to say it, but that means your motherboard is probably obsolete.

Ok, I'll try doing that then... at least I know what sort of upgrades I could expect from them now. One of my buddies dads owns a computer shop as well, so I could always take it to him, I guess.

That's just your processor, Ivellis...still, I haven't found any Socket 478 motherboards (your processor is a socket 478) with PCI Express x16 graphics card slots...which means, if you want a modern graphics card, you're in exactly the same boat as Sir G.

To seriously upgrade, you could use a new processor, motherboard, graphics card, and more RAM.

In order to use one, you need the rest :S

But, you can use the RAM out of your old system, unless you really want to splurge.

So...it's gonna cost me quite a bit to upgrade?

Just noticed the other tabs - which ones should I post?
