ah - tech support are still with me and trying - this is their latest advice :

Hello David,

Thanks for contacting the Guild Wars customer support team and sending us the results of the DxDiag test. I would recommend updating your system's video card drivers by downloading the latest driver package from NVIDIA's website at www.nvidia.com . Be sure to uninstall the old drivers before updating in order to avoid any potential conflicts.

You can uninstall your current NVIDIA driver by using Driver Cleaner. Please download Driver Cleaner http://www.drivercleaner.net/ . Install and launch the program. In the drop-down menu select NVIDIA and then click on the clean button. Be sure to also look for any other manufacturers names that you may have had installed on this system at one time in the past. Reboot your computer and continue to install the latest drivers from www.nvidia.com .

This should resolve the issues you are encountering. If it does not, please let us know and we will work with you further to resolve the issue.

I also would recommend increasing the size of your Page File, in Windows. You can do this by following these steps:

- Right-click on your "My Computer" icon and select "Properties".
- Choose the "Advanced" tab, then click the "Settings" button in the "Performance" section.
- Click the "Advanced" tab here, before selecting "Change" in the "Virtual Memory" section.
- Select the "Custom Size" radial and increase the Initial Size to 1536, and the Maximum size to 2986.
- Click the "Set" button and Windows should prompt you to restart your PC. If it does not, then please do so.
- Ensure that you have enough free space on your system partition to support your pagefile

Kind regards,
GM Ian

Well I have pretty much done the page thing already, so it's off to kill my drivers and install new ones.

Do try the thorough cleaning as it is a possibility (extreme slowdown and vidlag result in drivers overlapping). After that I don't know what to tell ya. Hard when you're not actually 'there' to tinker. Did you try the 0 paging file thing?

Well I am totally in the hands of the GW tech support people. I have to say that despite the fact that the problem is yet to be traced down, they have been remarkably patient and consistently helpful through the many letters we are exchanging.

Todays events had me dowloading EVEREST and running a full diagnostic report on hardware and drivers - that all came up OK.

Just now I was asked to download a program called "Hijackthis" and again run a diagnostic scan and email off the log it generated.

Lots of time and effort going into this, and I feel the GW people are giving me good support. Now if we can just trace down what the heck needs fixing I would be eternally grateful.

Yes - there was an update TDC and it solved my problem.

The update was an Athlon 64 3500, 2.2 GHZ, 1 GB Ram, MSI GBN Diamond motherboard with a 6600GT PCIE vid card, SATA2 hard disk, and a nice big LCD screen.

Which goes to show that if you can't solve your hardware / game issue it pays to have a reasonably healthy disposable income .

I am told it will work even better with twin vid cards the same size. Will keep that in mind for the future

Well I think I have worked out that post searing is not a good place to be if you are still level 2 .

LOL yes it can be a bit dangerous. If you need a escort until you level up I have a Necro/Warrior in Post searing (level 7) and some other higher level characters.

My ingame names are

Whirlwind Axehand
Caalador Truestrike
Edric Stormfire
Torak Deathmaster

I decided to retreat to a pre searing character and build him up a little first. I am just playing about before I get serious with a character at the moment. I am getting interested enough that I am even considering reading the manual sometime soon .
