Welcome Kronostia, glad you could join us.
I admire your passion and respect your opinion, but I would appreciate a more courteous tone. AFA Raistlin being the "coolest" fantasy character EVER, I'm afraid that is just one opinion. There is a certain drow ranger that has been around for far less time and is HUGELY more popular than the Mage Majere. Not only has he starred in his OWN trilogy...he also prominently graces the Home Page of W.O.T.C. And personally, I've always thought Gandalf was the coolest of the cool when it came to wizards...but he was also the first fantasy wizard that most of us over the age of 20 ever read about. As I mentioned earlier, the two BIG differences between Gandalf and Raistlin are: 1) Raistlin is a mortal human and Gandalf is NOT. He is a Maiar (I think?) - a deva-type being with innate powers far greater than humans. He (like Fistandantulus) just chooses to walk around in human form. 2) Readers are shown JUST how powerful Raistlin is when he defeats Takhisis. However, I've always felt like the reader was only shown a small portion of Gandalf's true power. He never does REALLY cut loose with everything he has. Still, it's always good to hear NEW opinions.

Was he a mage, though? I always thought he was a fighter-type? BTW.... [ 04-01-2002, 11:37 AM: Message edited by: Cerek the Barbaric ]

Hello again.
And Cerek the Barbaric, i am sorry if u didnt like my tone. It wasent meant to be offensive. It was the means to prove a certain point ![]() Anyway. I guess that with the certain drow Ranger u r meaning Drizzt Anyway, as the start of this topic was showing only the 3 mages i picked the one i thought was coolest. If u wanted too u could pick in alot more other powerful characters...i mean...say Belgarath (bad example i know, plz dont flame me). He attacks with the speed of thought...and if look at what he can do then he can whoop those 3 togheter. It`s all about what sort of character u wish to bring into the discussion. And i personally think that Drizzt is a bad example...hes a what ? Lv 16 Drow Ranger, which if u look at the company u brought him into is pretty weak *smiles*. But as ppl has stated throughout the entire post, Every1 is entitled to their very own opinion.

Gandalf, as a Maiar, pretty much started out powerful and stayed that way. He isn't a god though, nor has he fought one.
Elminster was granted innate powers as a champion for his god, but he still can't tackle a god, or even a suped up Avatar. Raistlin started out a mortal, a weak human mage who was made even weaker physically. His hunger for power allowed him to become the most powerful mage that has ever been on Krynn, more so than Fistandantulus. He fought with a god on her own plane and would have beaten her. The only reason he didnt was that the world he would rule over would be destroyed in the process, so he gave up. He is still the True Master of the Tower, even after "death". Raistlin's strength is that he was mortal, he was weak and despises that weakness. It is this hunger for power that drives him to gain it for himself, not be born with it or given it. They are all from different Realms though so pitting them against each other is a bit strange, where would these duels take place? What rules would there be, if any? Any artifacts allowed? Any spells or powers forbidden? At what stage in their life are they fighting? |

Well, I don't know who's the best or most powerful of these three since all seem to have become semi or fully immortal in their chase for power. I'd just like to congratulate each on their lifetime devotion to magic advancement(Elmins in "Making of a mage" or some title book like that, do have it), Raistlin kaving a hellish sickened life for his power, Gandalf...I don't know his background well. Oh yeah, "Every law has an exception"

I didn't take any offense at your tone. But I DID think asking if everyone was "moronic" was a bit strong....still, no harm done. AFA as including Drizzt...you called Raistlin the coolest fantasy character ever created....that opened the door to inlcuding ANY fantasy character, and I was just pointing out that Drizzt has a pretty solid lock on the Mr. Popularity vote. Thanks again for Posting. You made some very good points as to why you felt Raistlin was the most powerful mage. But, as I mentioned earlier, if you REALLY want the most powerful Dragonlance mage, you would need to choose Raistlin's nephew, Palin(?I think that his name anyway?).

I know he's not necessarily AD&D, but I'd take Elric of Melnibone. If his sorcery didn't get you, Stormbringer would.
