Actually, Dundee, I believe all of the formations in BG1 (even the "hidden" ones) have the Party Leader in a Tanking position. It's only in BG2 that the different marching formations have different locations for the party leader--but that still isn't perfect, because you might find a Formation that you like (for me, it's the Pentagon), but the spot where it puts your party leader (the center) doesn't fit your current party.

Six is correct. I purposely checked all of the formations, and none of them protect the leader in BG1. I guess either Kagain or Shar-Teel will be the leader in my necromancer game.

First...Firewine's not so bad with a hardy soloist, though there really isn't enough reason to loiter there.... Second, Tarnesh made me stop playing BG on my first game, and consider myself inept and stupid. I didn't play BG for a full month because of that defeat. All that IS annoying, but the map that takes the cake is the one in Baldur's Gate with the Blade and Stars Inn. It has so few quests that I skip it mostly. To my knowledge, a whopping four quests are on this map, and only one of them actually begins here! I get annoyed by having to go here in the geas quest, mostly because it's the only time I ever really HAVE to go there.

Sorry for the rant.

IMHO Firewine ruins are just a little annoying but a good source of free Fire Arrows.

If your take your party in through the secret door in the basement of the Winery in the Gullykin Village. Leave all your party there by the door after you go in and venture out with your thief and a good tank. I have never had my party attacked there while I used the thief and the tank to explore the majority of the ruins, kill Kobolds, and collect Fire Arrows. The passages are stupidly too narrow I agree but, if you do the majority of your exploring first then move your party into position to attack the Ogre Mage after. I found that is the only way I could make the ruins bearable. Personally I do not mind any of the BG quests but I dread the Werewolf Island because if you do not plan ahead and powergame a little you can find yourself stuck on the island without a weapon that feasibly can kill the head werewolf guy (forgot name)(see stupid self). Also used to dread Durlags Tower when I first started because of all the running around to solve puzzles and getting your a*% handed to you at every turn. Just MHO.

My vote also goes to the wall in the city, and having to take 2 or 3 attempts to get your party to arrive on the right side of it for the building you want. The last time I played BG1 I left Firewine until the later stages of the game, when my party were strong enough to blow through the kobols, and we just came out with 150+ free fire arrows.

Cloakwood and its mangey spiders and web traps is the most agravating area. Constantly hearing the gurgling death noise of my main character (a mage) makes me follow suite. Not just that but the constant maze of trees and side caves leads only to a premature heart attack!!
