Well, ST, I do think you should run an anti-virus program, I just don't like McAfee b/c it can damage and bloat a Windows installation, I'm very familiar with what it can do to an XP system.
There's a great free app called "Spybot Search and Destroy". This program has done more than any other to protect my system. If you describe the Windows trouble, I can probably help you with it.  I'm not suggesting to do this in lieu of an anti-virus, it's just that sometimes there are better ways to remove problems, the anti-virus apps are pretty much the best way to avoid getting problems.  Oh, and a tri-corder is the tool used in classic Star Trek that someone, usually Mr. Spock, took down to every planet they ever visited to scan for whatever made sense plot-wise, usually life forms or energy sources.
