Well, Bryant's the only one with a legitimate excuse...the rest of the no-shows should be ashamed of themselves, not that they would care.
On the other hand, isn't it great that these games are getting so close now - any of four team really have a good chance to win it. US still the slight faves on potential, but I wouldn't be surprised if Litueva or Espana got up for the gold. |

The USA are OUT of the gold medal game, having fallen to Argentina.
---------------- US Dream Team dunked August 28, 2004 From correspondents in Athens ARGENTINA defeated the United States 89-81 this morning in the Olympic men's basketball semi-finals, dethroning the three-time defending champions. The US team becomes the first group of National Basketball Association players not to claim Olympic gold. With three defeats in Athens in total, the US squad has dropped one more game than all US teams combined in the previous 68 years. More to ome Agence France-Presse ------------ Hopefully this will cause some of the powerbrokers in USA Basketball to realise that basketball is a TEAM game and they need to get their act together. |

Well and good. Team selection was poor, team attitude was poor.
Why didn't blue-collar stars like Ben Wallace make it onto the team?

I imagine there will be a post-mortem on the whole saga in coming days.
In a way I feel a bit sorry for these overpaid, arrogant multimillionaires...this probably wasn't what they expected when they signed up - I guess they learned a sharp lesson... |

I'm really dissapointed with the USA's loss today. Argentina really embarrased us...their 3 pointers were on target for the whole game. Seriously, they'd be totaly off balance and still drill a shot in. We really needed to bring in better 3-point shooters. Shooting 12/22 the other day was a big improvement, but it didn't show against Argentina. We better win that bronze...

Yes, well unfortunately this is the result that USA Basketball deserved for a pretty piss poor effort all around. In a way I feel sorry for these guys, the LeBrons, the Carmelos, the Odoms, as they at least turned up to play (even though they do get paid $$$$ and some of the younger, stupider ones thought it was a big paid Mediterranean holiday and they only started to take it seriously after they got thumped by Puerto Rico) - it's the apathetic losers who stayed at home, like Shaq, Kobe (well he does have an excuse), Garnett, Allen, et al who are really responsible for this, they couldn't be bothered to turn up - as well as their coach Larry Brown who hung them out to dry from day 1 to cover his ass because he didnt' think they could win.
The one player that I gained some respect for was actually the one I started off hating because I thought he symbolised everything that was wrong with US basketball - Allen Iverson. But I had to give him credit for the way he acted after the game (of course, it's easy to be humble when you've been humbled): Quote:
