So, you could have a picture that resembles a parchment or map, and then over that put the normal pics and then on an area view it shows thru?

Yes. But you can also use AreaViewZoneArt in the zone editor to select a small pic that has a particular square for each zone. Check out Steve McDonald's website for a bunch of these that he has worked up.

Open up DC and look in the zone editor. In the bottom, righthand corner there is a button to choose which, if any, area view zone art to use.
