How can you take a novel seriously when the author is so much out of his mind? And he's apparently acclaimed for his science stuff too...

Well, as always, you can delve into true science fiction, and say that they changed the gene that affects rate of agin, thus making the people age faster...but that's really harsh on a person's well-being, considering you can't turn it off!

So, I'm sittin' here, while my roommate downloads (via Napster, legally) some Matisyahu, everybody's favorite Jewish Reggae artist.

Actually, I don't like Reggae, but I'm compelled to listen because of the novelty of the thing, and I find out that he's pretty skilled...

Oh, and for those of you who wonder what a Jewish man who makes a living singing Reggae looks like...

Keep in mind that the original settlers will be first generation... so it's three more generations in 40 years, not 4. That raises the reproduction age up to 13 or so... not much, but far more possible.

Also, you excluded multiple births from your calculations, Ilander. From BabyCenter.com...

Quote:
And while about 95 percent of multiple pregnancies are still twins and the twins birth rate is going up, the rate at which women are having higher multiples has been increasing even faster. Between 1980 and 1999, the rate of twin births in the United States rose by 53 percent (a woman's likelihood of conceiving twins these days is about 1 in 33). During this same period, the rate of triplets and higher multiple births went up by 400 percent (it's about 1 in 555).

So 1 in 33 births will be a multiple, and one in 555 will be more than 2. They do have higher death rates, though, so your point about mortality being zero is very true.

In any case, Happy Birthday, Hudson! I hope you were able to smearshare that cake with dad...

Hey... I was amazed at your analysis, though that might not have come through.

You forgot that there are no original settlers, they are created from genetic stock once the probe get there, they need time to age before they can reproduce.

Wow. I didn't realize just how long one's name stays on the Who's Online list here after they log out until now. I popped in at 8:50am this morning at home. NOT being logged in here at work, at almost 11:00pm now, lo and behold it looks like Ladyzekke is still online! When in reality I haven't been on here for almost two hours! I had no idea your name stays up for that long!

Anyway, hi everyone LOL. Just popping in!
