Yes but there are less crap ways of showing that you find something amusing.
Sure "lol" conveys the idea, but people can just say "wow that joke was great!" without adding "lol". It's just needless and shows a lack of effort and caring.

Thanks Intrepid! Hence the abuse.

Attalus posted this at the cafe a few days ago and I really did laugh ou load!

Afternoon, all. A pretty good day, so far nobody has yelled at me, but there's this afternoon.

But, as intrepid said, if I just put lol, people would not have known that I really did... hence the abuse!

I use LOL quite often. It is the only short thing I can type to show I am laughing at certain points in what I'm typing. Oh, I also though LOL stood for "lots of laughs," oh well! LOL! Of course when I type LOL I am not laughing out loud in some huge manner, nor laughing a "lot," just mostly chuckling. If you've ever talked to me before in IM chats, you'd know I do actually laugh quite a lot when I'm talking. So it fits for me in expressing myself the best I can with just text, and I plan on using LOL all I want! So there! If there ever becomes some abbreviated thing for light chuckling, let me know!
