The Iraqis must be more intelligent that we thought. Throwing stones at heavily armed soldiers wouln't be a clever thing. Either you aren't looking far enough or the Americans are more popular that the British. BTW the British are operating in the anti-Saddam south of Iraq.

From today's Times

Refugees hurl abuse and stones at the Desert Rats
From Daniel McGrory near Basra

SHAKING his fist at the British armoured column speeding past him, Abdiraza Jeri and his friends spat out a volley of insults as others in the weary trail of refugees threw stones at the Desert Rats.

The 42-year-old haulage contractor had been walking for three hours to escape the siege of Basra. He was intending to return with his fleet of lorries filled with water so that some of the city’s 1.4 million parched residents had something to drink. But he and thousands more tramping along this main road could not understand yesterday why such a formidable array of British tanks was parked on the edge of his city while gangs of Saddam loyalists slowly strangled Basra. British soldiers sitting on their Warrior vehicle looked stunned when a couple of packets of sweets that they had thrown to children were hurled back by their fathers.

Clenching his fists in frustration, Mr Jeri apologised for his outburst. “I have no love for Saddam, but tell me how are we better off today when there is no power, nor water. There are dead bodies lying in our streets and my children are scared to go to bed because of the shelling.”

Ah. You mean the footage of the Iraqi citizen being rejoiced over the fact that he's just been liberated, though still voicing his concerns over a possible repeat of the abandonment after the Gulf War? Who was then wildly interrupted by another Iraqi citizen who criticised him for his optimism and yelled at him how he wasn't a "true Iraqi"? After which an Iraqi teacher tries to explain why there's so much skepticism and distrust among the Iraqi people towards the "liberators"?
I'm not sure if that footage was actually shown in the US (wouldn't even be surprised if it wasn't), but it proves my point that the Iraqi people are definitely not in one mind over the "liberation". Sure, from my position, I'd also say they're probably better off in anyone else's hands than Saddam's, but you can't blame them for that distrust and skepticism if they're seeing death and destruction all around them.

Thanks for the link Donut. Thats the only one I have seen, I have read several other Articals that is the contrary. Surley you have too. This part was especially stuck out in my mind-

Mr Jeri apologised for his outburst. “I have no love for Saddam, but tell me how are we better off today when there is no power, nor water. There are dead bodies lying in our streets and my children are scared to go to bed because of the shelling.

I cant think of any time I have read of Iraqi civillians apoligizing for hugging troops and saying 'I am sorry, I acually like the opressive regime of Saddam.'.

Correct me if I am wrong, but there was no power or water in Basra prior to the attack anyway. And yes, there are dead bodies in the streets, most likley Iraqi Soldiers bodies.

Look Donut, you can believe what ever you want. You obviously think the war is Unjust, and no amount of dead Kurds and broken UN Resoulutions is going to change you mind. So I really dont know why I am trying.

Have a nice day.
