I would like to see a less "slanted" account of the events. reading many of the other posts about that link would suggest that the locals are not endeared to the points from the "con" side.
Even better, I would like to see a video of events - then I could decide myself about what happened and who's cuisine reigned supreme.

However, I would imagine that she thought he meant America is good and the rest of the world is evil, presumably taking "good and evil people in the world" literally. She would have interpreted his sentence as America is intrinsically good, and the rest of world is intrinsically bad by nature of them not being American. She obviously was reading far too much into what he said (if he was referring purely to American criminals trying to break into his house), but the instinct outside of America is to equate statements of morality made by right-wing Americans with the global conflicts that we see today. When we (meaning us outside of America) hear right-wing American's talk about the evil in the world we immediately think of the Middle-East and the belief that Western values are intrinsically better and it is a moral duty to impose them on others. The extent to which this association between American action in the world and our consequent amusement when we hear right-wingers speak of values might not be immediately obvious which is why I thought I'd elaborate. I would imagine it was this connection which made her immediately link his categorisation of good and evil to the world and therefore why she said it was fantasy. She was basically refuting the school of thought which holds there is a clash of civilisations, one evil, one good. Sorry if this takes it slightly off-topic, although I think to understand her response it was necessary. And this definitely isn't supposed to start a debate on Iraq! ![]() [ 10-14-2004, 08:50 PM: Message edited by: shamrock_uk ] |

What really annoyed me was when she said there are plenty of other sports! I personally am against guns in houses, but I see nothing wrong with licensed gun clubs for people to practice at. You're no more likely to kill someone there than you are at an archery club, and it's a sport which requires skill as much as any other. Attitudes like that do the anti-gun lobby no favours at all....

I know this is not the kind of post Larry wants to see here. Poor Larry. But, I hope he has enough of an answer to his question now, that we can say some things that need to be said. If not, then smack me down as need be. Whatever, I care not.
Where my government is concerned, I have some control over whether or not they disallow guns. I think my government sucks in all aspects, and they are probably lucky that the socialist regime that exists in Chicago keeps guns away from law-abiding Chicagoans like meeself. I'm the kinda guy who wants to kill terrorists who damage/threaten my government, but am happy to support those US groups that would oppose it. The government sucks, and needs to be revamped -- at gunpoint if necessary. But, where other nations are concerned, the are free to take my guns, bow, and sword. But only after my last round is expended, only after my last Razorback arrow is fired, and only after I have swung my last sword. If other nations don't understand that weapon ownership is an integral part of freedom, then they can go home and sulk in their own socialist regimes, and kiss my big fat glow in the dark ass. |

Touche. But aren't you more free when the need to carry a gun doesn't exist?

As I recall, Europeans have a problem with a momma that likes the "Sadistic abuse for the simple pleasure of it" school of parenting. America had enough of that back in '76, and we decided that the government would be the people's whipping boy, not the other way around. Quote:

"It's about as exciting as watching flies ****!" I'm about as interested in a European politician's opinion on Domestic policy in my country as I'm certain you're interested in Pat Buchanan's position on your Domestic policy. Let America solve its own problems, or stop complaining when we act like a self-appointed policeman. Quote:
Furthermore, if you don't like the US's gun policies enough that you're worried about getting shot, well, don't come here. You have no particular right to be here above and beyond citizens of this country. And since I wholeheartedly object to Australian gun policy, I won't go there. Not like I have any business there anyways. Quote:

To say that a couple of Nazi Psychopaths (they were both) like they are an honest representation of the Second Ammendment foundationalist types is a beyond unreasonable and downright myopic way of looking at the situation. You ought to read the Nazi platform for starters... I suppose if you're afraid of people voting from the rooftops, you think the .50 ban in California was a good idea. Then you found out I hope that despite the lack of crimes committed with .50BMG loaded rifles, that the law passing process in California worked something like this: 1)Watch action movies with such rifles 2)Assume such rifles are used a lot by criminals 3)Plan to do research 4)Stay up partying all night staring at naughty zoo and drinking S'mores Schnapps 5)Don't do research 6)Put bill on floor anyways 7)Vote 8)Fail to pass 9)Put up again 10)Fail to pass 11)Put up again 12)Knowing it will fail, vote (illegally) in presence of nonpresent state assemblymen I forgot the step inbetween steps 5 and 6, acquire (through political connections at the top of state government) Concealed Carry Weapon permit while saying that they shouldn't be allowed. Well, this rule only applies if you're Dianne Feinstein or a scumsucking elitist rat-bastard. If any disparity exists between the two however, it's news to me! Quote:

There is a slight of difference between "a worldwide debate on gun control" and "a worldwide gun control debate" Slight but significant.
