On the economics of GM foods, I cite Time Magazine from 2 or 3 weeks back. It had an extensive article detailing numerous small farmers who were on the verge of bankruptcy. In order to boost their profits per unit, they went to organic cattle ranching. This allows more price per unit, because organic foods sell for more.
Three to five years later, in every instance the article cited (and I've found Time to try to look at both sides of an issue), the farmers said it saved their farms. Not only do they make more per unit, the herds are less sick, live longer, and produce better. Who'da thunk that if you just take animals off the chemical treadmill they get healthier? It is of my opinion that foods from cattle taste better when the cattle haven't been on a hormone program. There are places in my area that only have pure organic foods for purchase.
While it does cost more, for me the taste difference is enough to pay extra. Personally I’m not too worried about what went into producing the food but how the food tastes overall. |
