Question: I'm in the public Sensorium, and i know Lady Thorncombe is supposed to tell me that she doesn't want to teach magic anymore, but somehow i can't get her to say anything, she's too much distracted or something and i don't get much talk out of her. Am i missing something here ?

Well, it happens in BG2, so I guess it's occuring in PS:T as well. Simply save (in a new slot) and reload, and try again.

And now i don't get the receipt required to enter the great foundry. I seem to have done everything properly, and i got two other items from the advocate, but not the receipt. Tell me...can i patch the game without losing savegames ?

Never mind that last question, apparently i do have to start a new game after patching, and i very much would like to avoid that. But could anyone please fill me in why i didn't get the receipt to enter the great foundry ? Because according to what i read, that's one of the three items the advocate should give me after helping him out, and i'm pretty sure i got the message that three items were received, but no receipt.

So right now i'm pretty much stuck.

Well you could get a savegame editor and give yourself the item. Personally I use the Infinity Engine Savegame Editor.

Tell me more about that editor, like where do i get it ? Does it screw up savegames ? Thanks in advance, i've been running around all evening mindlessly, looking for clues or something i could have overlooked, to no effect, so i'm guessing this must be a bug. I'm out of options, so tell me more about this editor please.
