'Tis true that having a backup weapon for missile shields is a good idea. And mooks do make adequate rangers (I prefer felpurrs or hobbits personally). However, before I had to restart (a story for another time, but it involves the mysterious disappearance of all my save games involving my highest level party) my ranger was around 15th or 16th level. With just the double shot crossbow and some decent ammo, he was dishing out the damage. Maybe not as much as the sword, but 6 chances to critical hit were starting to pile up. But off the tangent and back on to the topic, my ranger carried around his sharpened stick as a backup extended weapon; and he never used it. At that point in the game (Bayjin) I had yet to run into too many monsters that cast missile shield. What does that mean? It means my ranger's polearm skill was less than five. So if I was using two handed swords the whole time instead of polearms, my sword skill would still be less than five. At that point I think I'd rather take my chances with the missile shield.
Of course, if you develop both weapons (at a slower pace) I guess you cover your butt. But is it worth it?
