Good stuff here, and talks about the possibiliy of a sequal, though some people are asking for a return to the TV series.

Edit: Here's another website

Thanks Larry, great site. Looks like the number of movie-go-ers trippled on friday. Must be the weekend. Also, I wonder how this movie is doing in the rest of the world. Wonder if there are any stats on that.
Edit: on another note. This movie feels like an election, where I'm running around checking the stats from various sources, hoping my candidate will win.

Actually, personally, I was disapointed by the "movie". It's more a 2 hours long tv episode than a movie.

There was no depth. Tons of plot holes and things left unexplained, acting was mostly wooden, they didn't really try to introduce new people in the story... My friend that's a big sience-fiction/fantasy fan but never saw the series actually fell alseep on the movie. Many people in the theater that obviously had never seen the series actually starting laughing out loud at some of the cheesiness.

I've already forgotten most of the events, but it was definitely tv series quality. I'm not surprised it didn't do that good at the box office. The only reason it did so good is that people liked the series and are biased because of it, so didn't really notice or care about the quality, compared to other movies.

Luvian,
You are the first person I've heard say that. My boss went -- who hates Sci Fi and is in her 50s --, coworkers went, some who knew the show and some who don't, my parents and brother went (all who did know the show), and each and every one of them loved it.

I really have to question your review. What specifically did you not like? I questioned several people after the last showing. I heard no one think it was "cheesy" or tv quality. Sorry, but your review sounds a bit too much like ones I've read by trolls we've seen on the Star wars thread ( I AM NOT CALLING YOU A TROLL -- I know you're not -- I'm just asking you to put in some specifics).

I was going to reply, but decided against it. I'll just say I have doubts about what you say and leave it at that.

Oh, and if it was as awful as you said, I really doubt Ebert and Roper would have given it "two enthusiastic thumbs up" and raved about it during their show.

Aww... I was trying to edit my previous post to remove my sig and I deleted it by mistake...

harlequinn, you're obviously biased by the series. You alone made half the posts of the thread, and reading them, I can see you're very enthusiastic about the series. I think that even if the movie had been awfull, you would still have liked it.

If you look at my post on the first page, I was really looking foward to this movie. I must have watched the trailer 10 times in anticipation. I do hope they bring the series back eventually.

But the thruth is that it's a pretty average script for a movie, and they didn't even try to make it as a movie. They just picked up about where they left it in the series. They didn't even try to introduce the world for those that didn't know it.

For example, they didn't even explain Shepherd Book. They show up there all of a sudden, say a couple of lines to him and leave. People who didn't see the series couldn't tell him from Joe Nobody. Then they come back and find him dead. To the ramdom guy, this mean nothing, they never saw the guy for more than 15 seconds.

River wasn't done really well either. In the series she can't control her emotions and is mostly nut, with some mysterious and unknown powers thrown in. In the movie she's acting mostly normal. The only strange thing she ever say is "I swalowed a bug". I think that ruined the character. Instead of a nut escaped lab experiment she's a quiet psychic.

Actually, they didn't even introduce any of the characters or their backstory, it was expected you already knew the cast. It was really just a continuation of the series, but 2 hours long because the author can't make it 1 hour long anymore. They should have called it Serenity Special: Episode 15-16.

They also failed at really introducing the Reavers as what they are. First we see them attacking a small town while the heroes are stealing the bank. That doesn't really make them seem that evil, much less monsters. Then the only other time we see them is their "fleet". The ships don't even look that bad. We just see them scavenging scraps in space. They really came out more as pirates than space psycho. The crossing of the fleet could have been way more scary if they had handled the Reavers better.

The whole movie is like that. Instead of discovering and living the events, they are explained. "These guys are evil", "These two are married", "This one want to have sex with the doctor". There is no subtlety, they just come up and say those things. For those that didn't see the series, the world and characters are not fleshed out at all.

Then there was the final fight. I'm sorry, but it really break my disbelief when a 16 year old girl can kick the crap out of a mob of armed fearless enraged druged cannibals, even if it's a really well trained girl. The bar fight was ok, but this one? Pure cheese. Did she even get hurt?

I'm not going to go into the plot holes and bad acting, because I don't remember enough of the movie for that, but really, if the movie was so good, it would be doing a lot better in the box office.

I am hoping to all the Gods of D&D that there be an uncut edition of this movie on DVD that has more fight scenes at the end. I need it!

Luvian, you make great points. Personally speaking, it delivered more than I was expecting and so I was personally satisfied with my ticket price and two hours. It did feel just like watching the TV shows...I know because I had watched them all that day and the night before on the new DVD that I have...and maybe I was a little dissapointed that there was not more of a "movie" feel to it...but I really cannot complain too loudly because the movie did for me what I needed it to to satisfy my taste. I am not a critic by any means, so am easily entertained.

There's one thing that I didn't like, but it was more about the author than the movie.

It's about Shepherd Book. As far as I remember back in the series, who he really is was never explained. Back when the movie was made, the official word was that the tv series was over, and as far as I know, there was no talk of continuing it.

So, he make his movie, kill Shepherd Book, and never tell us anything about him. When I first saw him onscreen in the movie, I thought "That's it, we'll finally know". But no, he just kill the character. Now unless the series ever restart, that story arc is aborted. Thanks a lot, nice fan service.

Now you could be saying "But he could explain it in a sequel" and I'd reply that since he couldn't bother to give any background on the main characters of this movie, I doubt he'd spend much sequel time for a dead character that got 15 seconds of screen time.
