You are right about Eowyn stabbing the Black Captain in the eye, so to speak. But it does say later on (I think about 2 or 3 pages after) that the sword from the barrow downs alone had the power to kill the nazgul.

Merry just stabbed the back of his knee (it was enough of a distraction), but you are right, Eowyn delivered the killing blow.
The Lord of the Nazgul said that no living man may hinder him (he took that to mean that no living being could kill him). He was wrong about his prophecy. It really had the meaning that no living MALE could hinder him. It was a round about way of saying (like most good prophecies) that he would be slain by a woman. As soon has he made that statement Eowyn let it be known that he faced no living man but a woman. If he wasnt so full of himself he would have surely backed away, hehe. Of course if someone had told me that no living man could slay me, I would be pretty damned cocky also. Prophecies almost always come back to bite you in the arse. Just my 2. |

I have heard from the BIO on the History Channel(I think)that Tolkien caught alot of heat over having a woman play so significant a part in the story. That some of his contemporaries even accused him of being a woman in disguise.
