Why not the Belt of Inertial Barrier Dundee? Gives me a nice bonus on saving throws (not only against missile weapons, but also against magic damage).
Problem with Amulet of Power is that it decreases the casting speed by 1. It's only 1, but then again; faster casting speed is always welcome. Proficiency of my fighter/mage: Quarterstaff: ++ Two handed weapon: ++ Single Weapon: ++ So he's already kind of an animal with quarterstaves. Vhailor's Helmet is even better than the Helmet of Balduran, because it adds the "Cast Simulacrum once a day" which is pretty nifty IMHO. Maybe the Gauntlets of Weapon Expertise *are* a better idea. I was unsure about whether or not the Bracers of Defense AC 3 would have any effect, and I've got enough protection spells, so that problem should solve itself. I've got this rather decent role on my fighter/mage as well: STR: 18/60 CON: 13 DEX: 13 INT: 18 WIS: 14 CHA: 12 I'm positive about the Strength and Intelligence, not too sure about the other ones.

Ho-no!
![]() ![]() Protection from Magical Energy is a level 6 spell, and grants immunity to Magic Damage. A Girdle of ~~ Giant Strength enables you to inflict more damage with your weapons, something very desirable. ADD] Being half-Mage, you already have Simulacrum. Helm of Balduran will serve you very well, although yes, you can keep Vhailor's Helm if you like. Nothing to stop you there. [ 03-12-2003, 02:20 AM: Message edited by: Dundee Slaytern ] |

As for weapons, Staff of Magi is a given. If you want more damage, Staff of Rynn is pretty nifty in SoA, then you can upgrade to a certain +6 quarterstaff in ToB.

Well.. I haven't got Vhailor's Helmet yet, so it would save me some money, because the Helmet of Balduran is already on my head
There is one thing though: I'm pretty positive that it says in the description of the Robe of Vecna "Increases Casting Speed by 4", and it says with the Amulet of Power "Decreases Casting Speed by 1". There's a difference in decreasing casting speed, and decreasing casting time, so maybe I read it wrongly. I'll check it out again. ADD: It IS complicated, now that I've read it. The Robe of Vecna says: "Improves Casting Speed" and the Amulet of Power says "Decreases Casting Speed". Sounds like it's the opposite, but it isn't because improvement in casting speed is actually decreasing it. [ 03-12-2003, 02:35 AM: Message edited by: Link ]

Casting time refers to the amount of time it takes to cast a spell.
Each round is divided into 10 parts. A spell that has a casting time of 7 requires 0.7 of a round to cast. Wearing the Amulet of Power, you reduce the casting time to 6, requiring 0.6 of a round to cast the same spell now. Slap on the Robe, and it becomes 0.2 of a round( aka, very fast). |

I'm really getting the hang of it here. Buffing up, whacking some baddies. Soloing is fun. Now why did I get that "You must gather your party before entering forth" voice when I tried to exit the de'Arnise hold? Hm.. perhaps he I misled the computer itself, could be of course.
Spoilers (about the entire game)! ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ So far things are going great. Done the Trademeet quest in like 5 minutes (geez.. that was so easy!). I've also defeated the Shadow Dragon, who did me in a couple of times, but skull trap seemed to be the trick, while I was protected/improved by all sorts of things (Stoneskin, Protection from Magic Energy, Protection from Normal Weapons, Haste, Fireshield (Red), Improved Invisibility, Mislead). Enventually he went down, and I could advance to the Shade Lord, who was, by the way, a piece of cake. I really don't know why that Shadow Dragon even listens to that pathetic wanker. Despite the fact that I'm neutral good, I did kill all the Cowled Enforcers, who had the nasty habit of showing up each time you cast a spell in Athkatla. After a few reloads I even killed those ignorant uber-Cowled ones, but they were tough -- wow!! Casting high-level spells like Time Stop, Meteor Swarm, Gate. And I believe they had completely emptied their reservoir of Monster Summoning III. Those Ogre Berserkers and Ettercaps kept on coming and coming. *kisses his Wand of Cloudkill, who handled the situation just fine* My protagonist is now a level 13/level 13 fighter mage, almost at level 14. I'm not quite sure what that means (how many levels until I reach my max in Shadows of Amn?), but I know he's doing well. I still need to do the Windspear Hills, Kangaxx, Guarded Compound, Bodhi's little Thieving Guild in the Graveyard, Planar Sphere, Unseeing Eye, rescue Haer'Dalis from Merkrath. A whole bunch of high-XP quests, as you can see. Muhahaha! Amn will be shivering when I'm finished here!
