Let us face the facts of today, not our ideals. Most people drive to do their shopping, not because they have to, because they choose to. With supermarkets, people only have to drive to one location, do their shopping and go home. With small shops, people must drive to one location, shop, drive to another location, shop, drive, shop, until they finally have all that they need. The corporations did not create the demand for large supermarkets, they simply filled the demand of the consumer. Small stores also contribute to the destruction of the environment and resources through their distribution channels. A large supermarket requires one semi to deliver its goods. The semi only has to drive to one location, unload, and go back to the dock. To deliver to small stores, one semi may have to drive to 5, 10, or 15 shops in various locations around town. This is much less efficient and depletes more resources. If the consumers wish to keep small stores in their communities then they need to stop shopping at the large supermarkets and start shopping at these stores. The reality of it is however, like you, these people are ‘voting’ with their dollars. They continue to shop at the supermarkets, so why wouldn’t the supermarkets continue to pop up everywhere? There is a demand for them! ------------------ Never try to teach a pig to sing; it wastes your time and it annoys the pig I've got to admit it's getting better, it's getting better all the time |

Silver Cheetah,
Sorry for the overreaction of my previous post explaining myself, but I did feel somewhat attacked, and yes you did make a generalization about me when you said "Those supermarkets that you are so fond of"! It just seems like your posts are little more than a list of links and quotes. I am computer litterate and can go out on the web and search for sites that either support my claim or refute it. I have done this already. Many of the sites you list and quotes you make, I have read before, they are nothing new to me...perhaps they are useful to others that may not have a knowledge about the topic or an interest for that matter, so I am not attacking you for posting them, I am simply asking if YOU have any ideas on this matter. I would like to hear YOUR ideas for a solution to trade since you do not think GATS is the best solution. I would like to hear YOUR suggestions on how to better the lives of people in under-developed countries. This is much like a debate on the bible. I could quote scripture after scripture, but why, this has been done millions of times before, would it not be better to offer MY interpretation, rather than a simple quote from someone else? ------------------ Never try to teach a pig to sing; it wastes your time and it annoys the pig I've got to admit it's getting better, it's getting better all the time |

Silver Cheetah? Nothing about the info you have posted, just a tip to keep your posts tidy:
Every time you modify a text, you get a message at the bottom of the page after you post it. So you get a lot if you modify a lot! All you need to do to get shot of all but one is to go to the very bottom of the page before you repost and highlight and delete all the 'modified by...' bits. Just me being my usual angelic little self, lol! ------------------ |

I have just began school again, and my major is International Business Administration. It is a two year course at a Community college, then I will put in two more years at UNCG to get my Bachelor's. I am very excited about becoming a part of International trade and such. I feel that I can do very well in that field. I have only begun, and have not even read the first chapter of my school book, so I know very little about anything at all. This thread somehow pertains to me, but I am not sure how, as I do not understand some terms you are using. I would like to make more sense of it, and be able to ask my professor educated questions about it, but I will need you to somehow simplify what you are saying to me in this thread. To me, it is very long and such, and I would like to see a synopsis of it all. ------------------ Devoted member of the Ironworks Loyal guardian of the OHF Member of the Ancients' club Faith beset in The Rocks (they show the way, you know...) |

Ee chuck, there's just no pleasing you is there? When I venture to express an (unsupported by facts) opinion, you call it a sweeping generalisation. Now you don't like me backing up my viewpoint with facts. And here was me thinking that you'd be chuffed to bits.
And now here you are making sweeping generalisations! So my posts are filled with quotes and links, are they? Actually, this is the first post that I've put links in, likewise direct quotes. (I think I mentioned a book title in an earlier post.. but I think that was about it.....). I always think if you're going to back things up with facts (as you requested) then you might as well, if you're looking things up anyway, use the words as given and also give references. (Maybe that's my academic background. I was always warned with dire consequences should plagiarism take place....) Nothing exists in a vacuum. My opinions do not just spring fully formed from my brain, beautiful and elegant, with no input from anywhere else. Nor do yours! Opinions are forged over years of reading (books, sites, newspapers, etc, talking to other people, reading some more, watching TV, and of course, most importantly of all, from experience. As I personally have not lived in a developing country, anything I come up with is going to be on the basis of what I have read, from listening and taking note of other people's experience, listening to other people's opinions, watching tv and so on. I also know what I personally good and valuable about living in my own culture, and what I find depressing and non life affirming, and these things also colour my views. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I imagine that your economic theory was not formulated by you yourself (well, I know damn well it wasn't. I've heard it all before.....) butlearned from books and tutors. I imagine it has since been informed by many different sources. Please don't sneer because I quote others. One of my aims in putting links on the site, and giving names of books, is so that people who have little familiarity with this topic should be able to get a succinct (and what I consider a balanced) viewpoint on this topic. So, you want my philosophy on this, unburdened by backup facts. Well, you asked for it! My next post is liable to be quite long.... and I promise not to back it up with any facts or figures whatever. IMPORTANT. I note that you have not responded to any of my last post (apart from a small comment on supermarkets), except to criticise the way I chose to respond. I would be interested to receive your response to the points made re developing countries, as I'm sure would others. |
