I think Uatu hit it on the head - it's like a computer game on paper. When the computer is handling all of the complicated stuff , it's not too bad. But when I downloaded the SRD (the Open Source rules set) I realized that it consists of far more rules than the 1e PHB, DMG, UA and 2e PHB and DMG combined. Really? you ask. Yes, if you don't count the examples and graphics in the in those 5 books. There's a lot of stuff.

On the other hand, I'm sure that just like with 1e and 2e, you don't need to know every single rule, or even use them.

Yeah - as a computer game, it is okay (but then again, so are the weird, irrelevant systems of games like Final Fantasy VII, Final Fantasy Tactics, etc.).

(I just wish they called it Lame-O D&D instead of D&D.)

Question Mark Re: Art Requests

If you are looking for 3D terrain that is acceptable on recent computers what about the SSI 3D games? Offhand I can think of three from the first half of the 1990s: Ravenloft: Strahd's Possession, Ravenloft: Stone Prophet and Menzoberranzan.

I don't know where the terrain graphics are stored. I suspect it is in the res# files.

Legally, if you can use FRUA graphics, I don't think there would be a problem here.

We use the FRUA graphics under a blanket statement that WotC has mae about AD&D art. There's also the reality that SSI is now defunct so there is no one looking out for their former properties.

Officially, though, DC doesn't use any graphics where the copyright belongs to someone else. This keeps us from worrying about future issues, even if they are unlikely.

Good, the legal side is quite straightforward! That means graphics in all D&D games would be available. Though most of the games made since 1995 seem to be overhead view, a view more relevant to features of the D&D rules. Such graphics would only be present in combat in DC.

Now that leaves the problem of actually finding and retrieving the graphics of 3D games. I think the programs are too small in size to contain the graphics. The best bet is the resource files.

So... its not a good idea to use the FRUA converted art???

I think it's fine to use the FRUA art in your mod (if you can't find a better option, aesthetically speaking), but I don't want to take the chance of having the DC project disappear b/c of it. This is all worst case scenario stuff I have to think about as an admin for the project. Realistically, Hasbro has done nothing to stop images from being used, and neither has WotC. The only company that regularly issues 'Cease and Desist' orders is LucasArts Ltd. And they only do it when money is somehow involved (including using SW images to draw in ad revenue via Google).

Added just a few icons today:

Goblin leader (spear)
Kobold with axe
Gnoll with axe and red cape

(Only the goblin is an actual new icon; the others are edits.)

(I also edited my dryad small pic, which had a shoulder error )

Nice icons! Preparations for an online comic?

Are gnolls bigger than humans in ADD?

Weeell... We'll see about the comic

Gnolls are 7' tall in AD&D (which is a rather iffy size for DC, so I gave the original gnoll icon a polearm to fill that space!).
