I think it's your lack of a 4th good melee fighter that makes the difference. Instead of Aerie if you would have a Paladin wielding Carsomyr it would make a huge difference. And by the way i didn't have any special edition, it was Soa with the interplay patch. My PC was a fighter dual wielding the daystar and the equalizer, keldorn with carsomyr, minsc dual wielding crom faeyr and the flail of ages, Jahera with the staff of the woodlands, and imoen and nalia in the back blasting off spells. Potions of Heroism, Giant Strength, and Invulnerability for the melee fighters up front. And Joneleth was a pushover!

a multi-class fighter/mage will get to 13/13 with the SoA exp cap. So i guess he is not that low-level, but come on, a level 13 mage is pretty weak. Also, a level 13 fighter sucks as well.

Level 13 mage has no level 7, 8, or 9 spells. Sure, your other characters can make up for this, but why bother? Just have a single or dual-classed mage.

Deximus, I'm wondering something...

Which side quests did you play? There's tons of side quests to get more experience. Just the experience you get from the required quests can almost get that high in level.

Multiclassing can be tricky for "large party" games because you PC will be significantly behind in XP compared to the other characters, and not having the high level spells for certain battles basicly defeats the whole point of playing a mage...

Dual classing is far more effective because if you learn the tables you can actually get to 10th level for your first class(certain classes) without even costing you one level in the second.

Example:

I have a Swashbuckler/MAGE that is 10/19(ToB installed). According to the table, even if ToB wasn't installed and I was playing by SoA level restrictions I wouldn't even lose one level off my character's max. This means that overall a Swashbuckler/MAGE is strictly better than a Mage. You get "**" in each of Quarterstaff and two handed weapon style, and extra 3 armor, extra 2 thaco, extra 2 to damage, extra attack: more than 8 times as effective on offense and at least twice as good on defense for physical combat. I was able to make the change at level 10 in Irenicus' Dungeon and be a level 9 mage by the time I entered the tent to rescue Aerie. Just pay close attention to your experience and try not to kill something too big when you're about to go to your target level for the first class. You don't want to waste that precious experience

Plus there's so many scrolls in Jon's lair that you often come out with a very balanced spellbook. Keep in mind I'm soloing. Once the thieving skills became active again my mage was like a house. -6 armor class. She tanks better than a Fighter/Mage, and is infinitely better mage than a Mage/Thief would be with the same amount of experience, and the thieving skills have already earned back that 160000XP I'm sure... I still don't have the Ring of Gaax and SotM yet, so she will have a -10 armor class by the time I face those pesky Demon Knights and Johnny boy...

Well, it only took me about 20 tries to find the BEST Mage class...

JeraalMordeth - I reckon i did most side quest (well i tried to anyway) but its only my first go at the game and i dont use walkthroughs so im not sure how many there are, but i did do a lot of extra quests, i had the money needed for imoen within a week game time maybe less and i kept goin for a while longer

I got to the part of the irenicus fight where it goes out of your hands but unfortunatly i was the slayer at tht point and i ended up dying just when i got back to what i presume to be suldanessellar, so next time i know once hes back to irenicus i better go back to me if im the slayer.

Thanks everyone for their fantastic help, and suggestions, i'll take them all onboard for next time i go through the game

Thnx again

is to use similicrum ( might have spelt that wrong ) and prot. from magic scroll. I've got Edwin & Imoen both with prot/magic in their quick item slot , have both cast similicrom and use their "doubles" to cast prot.magic on your best tanks. When the demons are dead just have the 2 chars. take on Irenicus in Slayer form . His spells won't hurt , just make sure you have plenty of health potions handy. Then when he's dead you'll still have the scrolls for use in TOB.
Works great for Kangaxx as well.

i didn;t read all the suggestions but this is difenately the easiest way. since he cast's magic it wou;d be wise to send in pathectic summons to use up his spells, then assault him with skeleton warriors and attack!!! use heaps of those tree guys to keep him busy while you pound him. Itz way way easy, and dude how could u survive without a good Cleric?

The easiest way to kill irencius in the elven city (first fight)is to haste your party and when the battle begins run away so he is out of site, then cast animated dead to get the big skeleton warrior, Send him to fight and he is resistant to all magic.

Ingenius!...although a little cowardly.

Merlin Al'Thor - Jaheria and Aerie together make up for no having a good cleric, though at times i do get brassed off by jaheria not not knowing spell and aerie not a high enough to cast it, but i get through

I have to admit the first fight with irenicus on the tree of life is riduculusly (right spelling??) easy, i just went at him with everyone and kaned his butt, didnt lose a hit point or waste a spell
