Al Gore invented what?

I only see one slightly small issue with an independent outside agency. Who would be in charge?
Then there might be an issue with legalities and enforcement within or outside of international borders. At least currently the FBI/CIA opratives have 'uh-hmm' 'cough' no boundries, 'cough'.

I spent 14 years of my career in Europe, if they needed something done, and done now, I hope international security is not on the line!

The UN? PAALLEASSE, but we know what you mean!

An independent private-yet-public non-profit-like organization would be ideal. Isn't that the case now? I wasn't aware that ICANN was a government agency.

Why is the Commerce department determined to keep a thumb on the button if ICANN can function perfectly on it's own?

Seems like this whole issue boils down to simply politicians EVERYWHERE all meddling together.

I voted for someone completely independent. I'm sorry, but I no longer trust the current US administration.

Independant, multi (multi, multi, multi) national, non-profit organisation. Good luck finding one.

It bothers me that the US has complete control over the internet. True, it was invented to aid communications for US military installations, but it has evolved and come a long way since then. It belongs to everyone.

The fact that the US wants to keep admin rights is just another example of the idea of the whole world being the president's back yard. With rights to sniff any flower. And piss on any bush.

The rule of the internet should be given to someone who doesn't want it. Anyone who is willing to take control of the internet is just going to use it for personal gain.

I think it's about time someone made a new internet. All we need is cable.

Cable, and at least one mainframe, or one of those super servers that's always on tv.

I think you guys are missing a basic fact in this inquiry. For some reason, the internet has become an anomoly of government in that the US government has, ODDLY, kept its hands more or less off of the thing. Now, I have no earthly idea how this has happened, but by God let's not jeopardize it by involving more governments!

TL is right... he didn't say he invented the internet... he said he "took the initiative in creating the internet". Still presumptuous but not as laughable as what the Repub. propeganda machine turned it into.

For all eternity Al will be known as the guy who thought he invented the internet... pretty amazing what words can do.
