Kirk, yes, although he is a show off...
Santanna, cool
Can't have a great guitar player list w/out Stevie Ray, or Hendrix, for that matter. However, let's not leave out people like Jimmy Page, Vivian Campbell, etc... there are a lot of great guitarists out there today. To skip around the topic a bit, my personal favorite this month...Zakk Wylde. He's simply inspired.
Oh, wait, shameless plug, Me.

Peter Green, Gary Moore have not yet been mentioned

Though I will not argue about Hendrix being number 1 however has anyone ever put their whole tortured soul and pent up frustration into a single note of concentrated emotion like Peter Green?

Bah the youngsters today

The best guitarists are found in fusion, and some really good ones in prog.

I think my favourite is Gary Green (10 points for the one that knows the band he played in). Steve Howe is also pretty good, not that fast, but very original and adding in his band.

For fusion, who can deny the power of Bill Connors, John McLaughlin, Al diMeola and Alan Holdsworth?

Of course I know he's the drummer of Metallica. I've typed him by mistake I meant Kirk Hammett as I've typed Kirk in my first post on the top of 1st page w Hetfield.

Joe Satriani.

He is the very best.

Trivia - he also taught Kirk Hammet and Steve Vai to play.
