The fact remains, Lego really isn't what it used to be. All these custom parts and stuff, and the prices just keep growing..
That is so true. Lego is shit these days. I think the rot started with the pirate ship stuff - the pieces had to be strange custom shapes and they had all the parrots and treasure chests and stuff. Now it's all Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings and crap. Theme stuff and very little just houses or space or castles and stuff. You used to be able to get your set of generic lego and make whatever you wanted. Now lots of stuff you can buy you can make like one thing from it and the pieces can't be set up any other way. I saw a box a couple of years ago that was a soccer field. It had a green board, bits for goals, and some men. That is like the anti-lego - absolutely no building required
It may not be as good as it was (oh the price!) but it still provides many hours of educational fun for my kids in a way few other toys can. I worry about Lego’s marketing though. The Harry potter and star wars stuff is just expensive crap that as you point out can only be used for the specific item it is designed for which defeats the very purpose of the product. Every young kid always uses Lego to build houses so where are the Lego kits designed to build houses? Sure you may get the odd door or window in a kit but that #1 aspect of use is not marketed. No wonder Lego is in trouble of going under.

Just my two cents

My son is hooked on Bionicles, but it's because they're Bionicles... not because they're legos. I too miss the good old days of "here's a bucket of 5000 legos... have fun ".

He has gotten several lego things over the past couple of years (ninja turtles, spiderman, etc.), and without a doubt, they're all "single-use" items. You build it one way, and one way only... and heaven help you if you lose a piece.

Ah, for the good old days...
