It would be best to ignore the stereotypes but for some it's easier said than done. When I was younger I walked into B. Dalton and was looking around and came across The Dungeon Masters Guide. Bought it, read it, came back and got the Players Handbook. Monster Manual was next, then Oriental Adventures and Unearthed Arcana, etc. I loved reading the books and wanted more, but unfortunately I was a shallow, meager little punk who didn't want my friends to know I was into that because they would think I was uncool. Now I wish I would have went after some friends or made new ones in an attempt to play PnP D&D. I'm sure it's a lot better game when you're not the only person involved. I missed out on something I love because of other people's stereotypes of D&D players and my own lack of self assurance. That's a shame isn't it.

I play some PnP D&D. When one of my "cool" friends found out I played, he laughed at me saying: "HAHA, you play childish boardgames with geeks!". I looked him straight in the eyes with my death-gaze and forced him to recognise his inferiority when he called THe ChrOmatIc DeMoN of UlTra-TeRRoR™ childish!! I cursed him and his entire family with the mother of all curses without saving throws: I made them like tell-sell TV shoppping and gave them a severe neurotic addiction of having to buy ALL the cr*p they display on TV 24/7 for the rest of their lives, which was forfeit in the first place, cuz I accidently dropped my vorpal swiss-army-knife™ and they all got decapitated. What can I say: he who laughs at others for their doing is the laughing stock of fate and karma together...

I'm one of the best looking guys in my class and I play DnD. In fact, we only have one person in my DnD group who could remotely be called a nerd, the rest of us are ehhm, normal guys. Well, we tend to be very socialistic and longhaired .

I've been playing PnP role play games for some years now in England and i must admit i've never heard of half the stereotypes etc, that American players have to put up with, but the thing that annoys me the most is the idea that all we do is play D&D and kill dragons, there are other role play games out there that deal with other issues and don't just have you wondering around dungeons. These include things like Mage (your telling me world of darkness is Childish??) both live and table top, GURPS & Call of Cuthulhu, for some quick examples.
I can imaging how people could mis understand a live mage game, but to call it and other PnP roleplay satanic or childish is insane (although some Cthulhu players can become odd... IA! IA! CTHULHU FHTAGN! ).
