The XP page dosent state explicitly what version its offering, but Im fairly certain its still 4.7. Ah - click on the features link from the XP page and you'll see its still 4.7. And the graphics confirm it.

That's weird because I uninstalled Messenger and reinstalled from this page, and I'm running 5.0

EDIT - I didn't go to the XP tab! The XP tab does say version 4.7, but I just downloaded from the link above.

This still doesn't explain why 4.7 told me there was an upgrade availible and let me download 5.0 in the first place though.

btw hope you all realise messenger 5 is bugridden and not very stable, crashes machines and causes various conflict problems too, not withstanding the fact that internally it doesnt get much right and i cant see any real improvements over previous versions, bah to Microsoft and their continual buggy upgrading

Seems stable enough on 9x. AoL keeps crashing it though, but I believe thats intentional. Woudnt want to try it on XP though, rather wait for the XP version.

I'm using 5.0 on XP with AOL 7.0 and I'm not having any troubles. Well, except the normal problem with AOL acting up all the time. But it always does that to me, no matter what computer I use.

AOL turns MSN off, comming soon, Internet Explorer that crashes your AOL but keeps you connected with it while also finding a way of charging you for it...

AOL = Scum

they have so many things wrong with them and the amount of machines i get in with AOL problems you wouldnt believe.

a) it conflicts BAD with so many programs, some deliberate and some not (ie use yahoo messenger and msn messenger with aol and sometimes great other times it hacks the shit out of both

b) the staff are incompetent and clueless

c) they will try and charge you up to a year after you cancelled the service and this is not a freak occurence within a year i have had at least 10 customers with this problem and thats alot id say.

d) Aol isnt particularly fast anyway and broadband kicks the living crud out of it anyway

e) Aol takes over your machine, the only way to truly remove it is to manually edit the registry and other files it sticks on your machines and most of the time thats simply not worth the hassle plus let someone loose in the registry and you can screw the machine up anyway

f) when you try and quit out of it the damn program repeatedly asks if you want to leave, yes i want to leave thats why i already clicked it twice damnit!

not quite as bad as freeserve that goes one step further and writes itself into the windows code so the only way to remove it is by a complete wipe! but freeserve is uk based only i think.

problem with aol is if your a complete newbie user then its great, you dont have many programs installed to conflict and it helps you every step so the majority of clueless users can get on with it but for anyone else forget it

Messenger has always randomly crashed my WinME machine at random times, especially if I drop, so I doubt i would notice the difference between a working and non-working version
