Is George W. Bush the worst president in 100 years?

It's not I don't believe them (they come up so often that I do) what I don't understand is, if his ratings have been and still are so low how did he get re-elected?

Because the democrats picked Kerry to run. I would have been willing to vote Democratic in 2004 (which is a pretty big leap for me) but there is no way in hell I was going to vote for Kerry.

The nomination process is settled by hard core activists, and the Republican hard core is likely closer to the American electorate than the Democrat core. On election day the moderates just have to settle for the lesser evil. And looking at the candidates programmes even I as a European liberal had to say that was Bush Kerry was just a mixture of Anti-Bush and social democratic union pandering, without any real substance whatsoever. Gore might have been a better pres than Bush though, but he seems much more at ease working on his special interests than on broader political issues.

I'd oppose the suggestion the GWB is the worst pres in the last 100 years for two reasons, the main one being Warren Harding. The second one being that his ideologically motivated stimulation of the economy came at the right time to soften the landing after the Clinton years. I'd even go as far as say that he is one of the most underrated presidents ever, not because he is very good (he isnt, especially not in terms of environment and diplomacy/foreign affairs) but because he got such an extraordinary bad press from his enemies:-p
