So if Bono get's the gong for his humanitarian work does that mean he is only able to comment on humanitarian issues in Africa and third world debt - why he's been nominated - and can't comment on music, Irelands troubles or performance theory, simply because he Nobel nomination ignores all that?

This time around they might actually make a difference, now the war is being perpetrated by a western nation it has much more international power both in opposers of the war and the wargoing countries themselves. You think saddam would give two shits who protested against him? NO. But the media and international pressure makes those supporters of the war listen to their counterparts this time around and people are taking advantage of that fact.
Hiho J&SB, have we talked before? If not, howdy

The discussion Moiraine and I were having is wether hollywood boobs, and/or the Nobel awardee's knew their behind from a hole in the ground when it comes to things that they are not expert in. Nobel prizes are given for significant achievments in a particular field, so that means they are experts recognized in that field, doesnt mean they are any more knowledgable about afairs of state, international Intelligence matters or WoMD programs run by dictator states.

It is fine to protest in a country where you are safe and secure and know that you won't be shot for voicing dissent, it is a whole different thing to defend a dictator while slandering and disparaging a leader of a western democratic nation. Unfortunatley that is what many of the protestors are doing. A lot of the protestors and posters here even ignore the facts and just say that they are all fiction, it is truely very sad.
MagiK, I don't recall we were talking about all the artists voicing their opinion, who you so elegantly call 'hollywood boobs'. However, if you want to shift the discussion field, no problem.

I happen to disagree with you in thinking that EVERYONE in our countries is entitled to have an opinion and voice it. Because :

- Everyone will be asked to pay the financial price and may be asked to pay a human price as well for the actions that will be performed by our leaders.

- Everyone may have to pay a price as well AFTER the war if it indeed happens, from eventual retaliation actions.

- Want it or not, if the UN lets this war happen, we citizens of the UN nations WILL be collectively responsible for it. You cannot ask people to take responsibility for actions committed without their consent.

- We all share a common world. Everything that happens in it affects our lives and our future. Each and every one of us has the right and the duty to take a part in decisions important enough that they will affect his life and his future. That is what democracy is about.
