Now wait just a dang minute here! Is this a Monty Python thread or an "America at War --War with Iraq" thread. (Slaps everyone up the side of the head) Get back to the subject at hand! (DAMN! I could be a mod! )

As I recall it was the United Nations that set up the state of Israel, not the US. They have been our closest allie in the region since. Of course we are going to support them! We support Saudi Arabia, Jordon, and Egypt too!

Sorry, Mister T., I tried to answer Despicado's remark in the most positive way.

Did these missile ranges appear in the report that Iraq gave to the inspectors back in Nov? or did the UN inspectors find these by surprise inspections?

Saddam probably doesn't know everything he has in stock but I would think he would at least know about these missiles and their ranges. Missiles are a pretty big and important asset.

Makes you wonder if he just isn't volunteering information until a UN inspector finds something wrong.

Kind of like going through an IRS audit

They were declared in the report. The Iraqis put them in the report because they didn't think the inspectors would challenge them. I don't think the inspectors have actually found anything unless the Iraqi's wanted them too!

Heh acting surprised is always a good trait to have. I'm sure all the Iraqi base commanders have been thoroughly trained to do that.

The Iraqis have had these missiles in the planning stage since '93 or so. The UN inspectors were aware of them, but the Iraqis were told not to change the plans or these missiles would violate the UN mandates.

The Iraqis changed the diameter of the missiles allowing them to carry more payload, more fuel, and larger engines.

The Iraqis added larger engines. Engines with 5 times the lift capabilities of those on the drawing board they'd been warned not to change. These engines not only allow the missiles to carry larger payloads (which the Iraqis had been warned about), they allowed them to carry more fuel, and to go farther.

Even TODAY the Iraqis claim these missiles do not violate the UN mandates, despite having been told that any changes to those original plans would be a violation, despite knowingly making the changes, and despite the weapons inspectors reports. Oh yeah, they're cooperating all right.
