If I recall the Communist Governments in both China and Russia both destroyed Buddhist and Orthodox(Christian) icons respectively when they came to power. Part of destroying the old and replacing it with new. I think the Taliban are representative of a Government in action rather than a religion. Interesting that religion and culture are so heavily interwoven.

LadyWendy! I'm glad you got away from that albatross! I had an idea that it might be a piece of shit when you mentioned the first problem, but I guess you had doubts too since you hired someone to have a look at it. I know thats expensive to hire a home inspecter but as you have found out it saves you at times. Its been a LONG time since I lived there but I do drive through at times on my way to moms/sister(Philly area)so I know things are pretty built-up around there. Dont let one asshole ruin your search for your home and if you need any advice you know you can e-mail me anytime. By the way saw your pic, can I be your next husband? Please?

Well my daddy is Bhaal and he can whup your gods asses anytime, so there!
![]() Seriously, it always amazes me how people can justify any action with religion. Personally I believe in a supreme being, but I don't attempt to guess what that is. I suspect the various religions are manifestations of him/her, but I realize that trivialises the subject. Problem is, being a scientist conflicts with my catholic upbringing, not that I practice. Wish we could all abide by the religions we profess to follow and live peacefully, but I doubt it. Human nature will always triumph ![]() ------------------ ![]() Peekaboo! |

Then I guess you are another victim of the new board flow control - does that to me at work, but not at home, which is weird, since my home connection is much slower ...

(Previous post was for Yorick)
I am a pure atheist, but what I can't stand is people destroying what they cannnot bring back. It is the same as killing, as one cannot give back a stolen life. It's humanity memory they shatter there, it's part of our soul ! |

LoA- hop a concorde...I want it NOW!
![]() LadyWendy: Good thing you found out now and not later, is all I can say! Water damage (shudder) is the worst thing imaginable! So sorry it means you have to keep looking, but I figure that only means something better is out there waiting for you! Uh, I hope nothing crawled out of there with you...sounds like Mold Central (waaaaaachooo...allergies acting up in sympathy! ![]() Yorick, I know how it was in Russia. Hideous. In St. Petersburg (then known as Leningrad) they took a glorious cathedral and turned it into a museum of atheism, as a means of controlling the locals. When I was there the first time I had many Jewish friends. Several were what is known as 'refusniks', because they'd been refused exit visas for Israel and other points west (and socially/economically disenfranchised for daring to ask). They told me of persecution outside synagogues and of the destruction of priceless art, tapestries and religious items in those synagogues by gangs of hoodlums being paid under the table by the government. I saw what communism did for the Andrei Rublev icons in the chapels in Red Square. Still makes me want to cry. In that case it was neglect, pure and simple. Only much later on did they realize they could capitalize on the art for tourism and western currency and then they started restoring the icons, but it was far to late for some of them. Ok, off the soap box...sorry 'bout that. LoA: Maybe I'll have to head South to your place...that bad foot of yours and all! ![]() Cloudy ------------------ ![]() [This message has been edited by Cloudbringer (edited 03-02-2001).] |
