I don't think the ACLU has an identity. It appears to be comprised of a bunch of lawyers from all political viewpoints and at times some of them speak out about an issue that they find interesting or directly effects them in some way.
Although they do sometimes serve a valuable purpose, for the most part they simply like to file lawsuits just for the sake of filing a suit. *sigh* Oh, well...there are worse ways to entertain oneself.....
