The annual Fete on the village green or playing field has long been a traditional, and enjoyable, way of raising money for some worthy cause in the village, be that repairing the church roof or building a new village hall. They were always simple home-spun affairs where everyone 'mucked in'.
The ladies of the Women's Institute usually provided the teas and the cake stall. The farmer supplied bails of straw to mark off the area for bowling and provide a wall for the darts competition. The scouts and playschool collected bits and pieces to sell (the forerunner of the car-boot sale).

All the games were the simple games of years gone by - bowls, skittles, darts, hoopla. If someone had a pony, there were pony rides for the children.

Many moons ago there was traditionally a greasy pole involved in at least one game. Either vertically for a climbing competition or horizontally for a pillow fight with sacks filled with straw. Musical entertainment was usually provided by local musicians.

Dalglish. No. Don't know anyone with that name. You should try Scotland - the name is spelt 'Dalgliesh' or 'Dalgleish' there, I think, and I should imagine that is where her family originated. But Scotland is even bigger than Birmingham and the name is fairly common.... Sorry to be so little help, Hiram! I'll go check out the phone book later and let you know how many Dalglish's there are.

Then again, reminds me that I was paired to play golf with a Mr Brown up in Granton on Spey. I asked him where he came from, and he said Edinburgh (back In Australia I have a mate who emgirated several years ago who also came from Edinbrgh). In what I still rank as my alltime stupidest utterance, I said to Mr Brown, "Edinburgh - I know someone who comes from there". Realising instantly how totally stupid that was we both laughed.

It turns out that Tom (guy from Australia) was the regular golfing partner of Mr Brown - they played every Saturday for nigh on 15 years. Small world really isn't it .

Thank you, Flotsdale. There is no need to go through any trouble. If I had insinuated that my grandmother had been Scottish, she would have been quite irate. I was just curious to know if that is a common name. I would love to visit Birmingham because my grandmother (Louise Daglish Weisenberger) grew up there and when she was homesick, she would tell me about how she met my grandfather in England. He was a WWII American Serviceman (Tailgunner for B17 I think).

I looked anyway. My phone books are a bit out of date - one for 1994 and one for 1996 - but I found one Daglish in the 1994 directory and none at all in the 1996 edition. But the 1996 is only for South Birmingham. Do you want the address of the one I found? I can try to find more info if you would like.
If she was born in Birmingham and you can give me her full name - address would allso be helpful, or at least the area of Birmingahm (also, if married in Birmingham, I can look for marriage record as well) I can check her out in the archives in Birmingham Central Library. No trouble - I sometimes visit with a friend looking up my own family genealogy.

Please understand that I wasn't trying to use you for geneology studies. I'm grateful for you effort, but it's truly not necessary. I was just curious. I learn so little from my immediate family about my extended family.
