I'm wondering how long does it take for the game developers to realise that they're not doing a damn thing by all those SafeDiscs, Hack protections and that crap. It's just bothering the normal player with the original game, the one with the cracked game will have it cracked, ergo no SafeDisc or any of that crap. That means that a CD for 2$ is more worth than a CD for 20$ because the first one doesn't annoy you. The only reliable anti-pirat protection so far, the CD key, was only appliable on multi-player games like StarCraft and Warcraft, and MMORPGs.

What type of graphics card do you have Bokken? Ive had AA set to 16x, ive heard that there are quite a few differences between grapgics card abilities in the game.

don't blame the devs, bozos. it's got nuthin' to do with them.

it's all the publisher. they see it as a way to ensure they get their investment back and don't really care what kind of problems the user has.

I started playing it on my Asus V9999 (FX6800) on my secondary PC but I find it runs just as well on my Asus V9900 (FX5800) on my main PC so I stuck with it. Oh by the way, the FX5800 won't run faster than 8x AA. Haven't checked the FX6800 but I don't expect a huge change anyway.

Have you played Far Cry? If so I think you will find the graphics in FC much better than Doom 3, but I still find that they both have their hot spots. I like the dark shadowed places in Doom 3. FC has exceptional eye candy but doesn't give it that eery feel like D3, not to mention the fact that this is the only game that has actually made me jump more than enough times!

[/QUOTE]I got the game last night and played for several hours. The graphics are far better than Far Cry in complexity, polygon count, and overall texture quality. However, the Far Cry engine seems to be better at rendering outdoor scenes (since there aren't any in Doom3 I'd guess that it's not that good at it) and scenes with long viewing horizons. Far Cry is a lot more colorful, but a lot less animated. The monsters in Doom3 have a lot more range of motion and appear to act more intelligently than in Far Cry. The atmospheric effects in Doom 3 are awesome.

Far Cry:

Doom 3 :

The Far Cry screen looks great, but the Doom3 screen is insane, the level of detail is an order of magnitude greater. Tons of unique details on the textures (unique non-repeating blood stains and such), many light sources as opposed to one, very complex shadows all over the place as opposed to relatively simple shadows.

That being said, so far I think the gameplay in Doom 3 is not up to Far Cry standards. Doom 3 is still fun, but it's almost in a retro way, because it reminds me A LOT of the old Dooms that I enjoyed so much. But shooters these days are a lot more sophisticated, and Doom 3 is lacking in that respect.

No support for Leaning or going prone, which limits your ability to effectively use cover, no sniping or stealth.
Gameplay that is primarily twitch based, less problem solving
No vehicles,
So far no (or very limited) outdoors (short field of view which makes it easier to render the high level of complexity)
So far just a few baddies at a time, this is something that Quake had that Doom didn't... in the old dooms you'd often face a ROOMFULL of bad guys.

SO... that being said, I expect this new engine will spawn quite a few games that will have all of the above and more, it looks to be solid evolutionary step forward in graphics engines.

Of course, I still hold hope that Half Life 2 will have the graphics capability of the Doom engine, all the stuff above, and SOOO much more. If they deliver what they've shown in their technology demo's we're looking at a REVOLUTIONARY game design, something that will take shooters to the next level.

Isn't that what was so much fun about Doom? You got to kill them too!

That's strange... they work for me. If you're at work maybe your company blocks gamespy?

If you go to the www.gamespy.com site you can do a quick search and get reviews and screenshots of both games... it allows you to do some comparisons (which was all that those two links were for)
