You think diamonds is bad?? You can eat Raw Ebony. Now that takes some serious skill. Oh, and right by the Silt Strider is a "starter dungeon". Its called Adamasturrus, you'll find some good stuff there, and its very very easy. Good luck, and hope you have a fun time in Morrowind!

To know the effect that an ingrediant (or potion) will have you need alchemy proficiency. The higher the skill the more you know about the item. Most items have four effects.

To mix items you need a mortar and pestle. Mix any two items with the same effect to get that effect in a potion. A retort will maximize good effects, an alembic will reduce harmful effects, and a calcinator increases both good and harmfull effects. All of these items come in (in increasing worth) Apprentice, Journeyman, Master, Grandmaster. All of these affect strength and duration of the potion.
