quote: most sorcerors don't know all that much about magic, it is simply an ability, a gift from some divine, or otherwise mystical and magical source, as such I would make him an invoker, dualed from a fighter as posted earlier. I tried reading the book of lost tales about 8 years ago, but couldn't get past the poetry at the beginning.

but then gandalf dosent seem to all that memorization thing at any point, so he would act like a sorceror even if he does get spells from knowledge rather than innatly.
i still think he gets all his power from his staff though, just look at him without it atop orthanc, a bit pathetic and not at all powerful.

I agree that Gandalf derives his spells from his staff. He also would posess some innate spell-like abilities, in his case spells such as charm person/mammal, in a similar way to the main character in the BG series.
I would say, staying strictly within the rules of BG without editors, etc, that Bard would be the class that could approximate Gandalf most closely.

Hmm, I agree that he's casting spells from his staff, but I dont think he is anything but some spellcaster, though. I just cant imaging him with a sword in a battle, nor he sitting and try to pick a lock!
![]() I really dont think there are any class in BG2 that matches with him. But if you were to make him, I would have made him a sorcerer. see ya! |

Gandalf always has magical power but he needs his staff to channel his power.

quote: haven't you read hobbit and LotR? he uses Glamdring in both, granted not a huge amount, but he does use both the sword and his staff

Gandalf is a sorcerer, in my view. I get the impression that his magic is more intuitive than learnt.
