Have a read of this article for plenty of detail about profession-changing spellcasters.

Don't think this will happen.
The fighter managed to catch up with the alchemist. But the mage is 250 kills ahead, and only ascension peak is left.

Crunchy you can use your Samurai, Lord, and Ranger as backup spell casters. Have your ranger or samuria learn Element shield and you should be fine. The only time I really needed two spellcasters is when I need to get soul shield and element shield up in the first round. If you are having fun with the party then just keep playing them. Any group can finish as long as you employ the right strategy. You will definitely find more powerful instruments as you progress through the game.

You're talking about that thing that offensive magic is weak?
Well, it mostly depends on your playing style.

If you have a party with three berserking fighters, and move around each round to the next monster, you don't need offensive magic, and it seems weak. And if you don't go for powercast, it really will be weak soon.

But if you have a party with many range characters (spellcasters, ranger, bard, gadgeteer), you'll be able to deal with big mobs from a distance. And sudedenly, the fighter(s) seem weaker. But you still need at least one as a defensive tank.

My team is: Fighter, Samurai, Lord, Bishop, Bard, Ranger.. I rather stupidly thought that bards can cast magic (having played too much BG2), that's why I didn't take another magic caster.
IIRC in wizardry 7 too, bard could cast mage spells.

The instruments make up for this though, but I'm a bit afraid that they will be underpowered later in the game. Will I keep getting better instruments later?
Yes, there are several level 7 spells available as instruments.
I always have trouble to decide what instruments to keep ready. Maybe some day, i'll use two bards in one party.

I kinda feel I might be too low on magic with my solitary bishop, even though he's already a kickass spell caster, he can just cast 1 spell per round.. Any justification for my worries, or will my backup casters be decent enough? I'm trying to make my samurai a well rounded fighter-mage..
Better make him a good fighter.
I've played several hybrid-only parties. Usually, they are quite useless in magic until level ~10. Then, for a while, it looks like they can be a master in fighting and casting. But 2-3 levels later, the monsters start to have quite resistances, and soon the offensive magic of the hybrids is useless.

For a good caster, he needs powercast. And quite high piety for high spell points. I had one party (4 hybrids only) where all characters went for int first. They were very good at magic at level 12+, but quite bad at fighting until level ~17.

Back to your party. You have 3 front-liners (Fighter, Samurai, Lord), one spellcaster (Bishop), and two other range characters (Bard, Ranger). I'd recruit Madras (Gadgeteer), and then you have 3 characters with 'spells'.

I wouldn't switch any of your characters. If you're really think you need more magic, and are quite early in the game, its better to replace a character with a new level 1 one. But i'd say: Play ahead, and try a completely different party next time.

250 kills ahead! Ok, no chance that will happen then.
