Orwell is amazing. I learned more about sociology from 1984 than I did from my sophmore year sociology class in college. J.D. Salinger is one of my favorite authors too, as well as Jack Keroauc.

My favorite non-fantasy author is Robert Ludlum. He writes mystery thrillers, two of which have been made into movies. The most notable of his works was The Bourne Identity. The movie adaptation starring Matt Damon was done reasonably well, although the storyline was changed quite a bit. Still, it was done fairly well overall.

The Matarese Circle is another excellent novel by Ludlum. Out of all the novels he has written, these two stand out as the best IMHO. The others tend to become a bit formulaic and predictable (although still entertaining).

I also like other mystery writers. During my college years, I was big fan of Sidney Sheldon and Ken Follett.

But with the intrusion of "real life duties" like a full time job and 3 kids, my "reading time" is practically non-existent now. I haven't actually read a novel in over 3 years...just don't seem to have enough time.

My wife still manages to read some of her favorite novels, though. Her favorite authoress is Elizabeth Lowell and I just bought her latest release this week.

For fiction Clancey is good.... well except for Patriot Games. I never liked that one. My non-fiction favorite is William Manchester's The Arms Of Krupp.

AYN RAND!!!!!!

She has got to be one of the most talented authors I've ever had the pleasure of reading. Fountainhead and Atlas Shrugged are masterpieces. While I don't 100% agree with all of her concepts, her logic is nothing short of phenomenal.

Tom Clancy is also a great occasional diversion from fantasy.

I just recently read The Bourne Identity - I really enjoyed it! Thriller types aren't usually my thing cause they're too scary but I was pleasantly surprised. Ludlum is a great author

To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee and Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck are two of my non-scifi/fantasy favorites. Oh yeah...Sidhartha by Herman Hess as well.

I've really only read about a dozen or so non-fantasy novels, and most of them were just ok, or pretty good, but I've never come across a non-fantasy book I've really liked. I've also never come across any book whatsoever that I just didn't like. Usually, I either think it's GREAT, good, or sort of good/so-so. I had to read To Kill a Mockingbird and The Outsiders for school last year, and TKaM was just so-so (parts of it were pretty good though) and the Outsiders was pretty good. I had to read both of them faster than I wanted to in order to keep up with the schedule for the class, and that took away a lot of the enjoyment (especially for TKaM, although I probably wouldn't have read it at all if it wasn't required for the class...).

My favorite would have to be Tresure Island. That's really the only non-fantasy novel that got me hooked. The Adventures of Tom Sawyer was up there, but definitely not as good as Treasure Island.

Peace out and good readin'!
