well what i don't like about it is that people who donesn't even know it exists will watch it and say wow its cool on where the ones who really know of it will appreciate it more and all that... but iguess that's why they are into commercialization... for more people tobe familiarized with it

You've hit on the precise reason I wasn't very enthusiastic when it first came out, Virgil. It was really hyped and so I wasn't sure how the film was going to be - I expected it to be really glamarous and Hollywoodish - but it wasn't, fortunately. But ack, maybe I'm just paranoid

The ironic thing is that Tolkien himself was very anti-commericial. He hated modern times, and all-pervasive consumerism. Under his son, the estate has attempted repeatedly to make commercial use of Tolkien's works without success. I suppose I should be happy that they've succeeded at this point, but...

Oddly enough, the film had nothing to do with the Tolkien family. The film rights to Lord of the Rings had already been sold by Tolkien to that Bakshi animator guy, and from then on to one Samuel Zaentz; Wingnut Films (Peter Jackson's guys) bought the rights from that chap, and from there got backing from New Line Cinema after turning Miramax down (Miramax only wanted one 2-hour film).
Ol' Chris Tolkien has, so the rumourmill goes, been trying to find a way to legally prevent the film's release - so far unsuccessfully. The entire Tolkien family seems to have this aversion to publicity...
