Alignment is easier to handle on pen and paper. Alignment shouldn't define a character... A character should define alignment.

I think that the term "Thieves Guild" is romanticizing crime. Anyone that has gotten the guild from Mae'Var soon finds out that this is not just a *second story* outfit. The "thieves guild" is organized crime..the Mob. They are involved in extortion, blackmail, robbery, murder, protection rackets, and slaving. As soon as I saw what was REALLY involved, I let the guild lapse back to Renal, and went about my normal *taking things that don't belong to me*,, ordinary theft.
Also,, does anyone here manipulate rep in order to keep npc's quiet? Inquiring minds want to know!! I'll kill a random noble that pisses me off just to lower rep and shut the npc's up.

Addendum to Viconia's situation:
I didn't see any guards around when I rescued her. All I saw were the fanatics, the priest of Beshaba, and the mob. Lack of guards?

Maybe we shouldn't forget that Viconia was in Baldur's Gate 1 as well. The player should therefore know something about Viconia at the least. I think that should be taken into account as well.

But - as Riftmaker pointed out - it doesn't matter as much what you did in BG1 as what the circumstance in BG2 tell you happened. For instance, I killed Edwin in BG1, yet here he is again. As for Viconia, she says that you know her and that the game implies that you knew her well enough to know the charges against her are false. As for Amnish guards, there IS a guard standing in front of the prison door. He is located between the two fanatics with bow and arrows - but he is the only one on the scene.

1: Killing Gethras: No Good character of any kind that I truly role-played would kill Gethras without more information. As Six said, break into his house, slay his guardians, and confront him in his personal chambers: yes, but kill: no. I've always thought it would be cool to be able to investigate Gethras (either by finding things in his house, talking to the authorities, or even just hearing from Edwin and verifying) and find out about specific evil/corrupt activities he is involved in, which would provide a motive for good-aligned characters to kill him.
That being said, I have killed him in every game so far regardless of character alignments to get the juicy XP/cash rewards of completing the Maevar quests. So much for my morality 2: Execution of Viconia: Cerek's comments about replaying through that scene bear out what I recall: despite the presence of a guard (I actually recall two but it's been far longer since I've played it) it's crystal-clear that Viconia is being subjected to unlawful mob "justice", and the PC should act accordingly based on that. My opinion would be that a Lawful Good character would save Viconia from the fanatics, but then turn her in to the actual Amnish authorities. In fact, I think any Lawful character would be likely do that, though a Lawful Evil one more out of respect for the possible reward and enhancing of their own standing in Amn. Unless they recognize in her an ally more valuable than what would be gained by turning her in, of course. I could see the Chaotic and Neutral alignments going either way on the mob justice issue, probably depending on their personal reaction to Viconia herself.

With the Virtue mod installed, I didn't take a Virtue hit when I killed Rayic with my CG Barbarian. Of course, I don't remember what dialogue options I chose. However, as I remember, Virtue doesn't affect dialogue.
It may be that I killed him on the 2nd floor, and not the 3rd floor. As for Vikki: I really don't remember seeing a guard. Honestly, I don't. I'll pay more attention next time.

There are guards posted near the temple of Waukeen and the prison, I believe. They're kind of removed from it all, but they're within eyeshot.
