I did something rather foolish with Valygar, I couldn't be bothered to (spoiler) fight Lavok again (this was my second time playing it), so I just handed him into the Cowled Wizards. You'd think that if he can kill two Cowled Wizards, he'd be able to kill me. He fell like a monkey hanging from a tree, that had no arms or legs ... and was constanly under fire from magic missiles.
Personally, I'd ditch Yoshimo, simply because I don't like him, even if he is the best thief in the game.

Aerie is a good character, and before you get Imoen gives you a second mage type to really round out the party (along with a cleric that can turn undead, to supplement Jaheira with her spells). However, once you add Imoen back in, your group will be a bit mage heavy, but still can work nicely (don't really have to conserve magic much, since you have so much of it).

An alternative, if you want to lose Aerie (i.e. assuming that you are romancing Jaheira in this case), then drop her and add Anomen. He does not whine like Aerie, but is annoying in his own way ("I once killed a billion giants with a toothpick"). However, he is a strong cleric and decent tank. The problem with this approach is that you will be the only mage in your group until you get Imoen back. If you do this approach, rush right away to go get her, then do the side quests later (if you plan to add Imoen, this is your best approach anyway; any xp you get while she is gone is xp she is missing out on, and will be behind the party).

Another alternative is add Keldorn. His special abilities allow you to take down mages very easily (***SPOILER*** to get him, go to the temple district; you should see a long display, then be approached at its end by a cleric of Helm. Go see the cleric at the temple of Helm, and you will be on your way to get him). With Keldorn in the party, it gives you another tank, but it also allows you to go a little mage poor in the beginning, since his abilities can take down enemy mages' defenses. Replace Aerie with Keldorn in this case, and then Yoshimo with Imoen when you get her back. You will only have Jaheira as a priest in this case, so make sure you are not mortgaging your healing ability with this choice.

Replacing Valygar with Keldorn means you lose backstabbing, but then are really good at taking down mages (3 mages + Keldorn? ouch! ). Personally, just leaving the party alone (other than replacing Yoshimo with Imoen when the time comes) might be the best option. Valygar can be a little frustrating in learning to use right in the beginning (as a beginner, better to use him as an archer and backstabber; he can be front-line material, but need to know proper equipment/tactics). Like I stated previously, with all of the mage power, better to let loose first then send in the tanks to clean up the leftovers.

Keldorn is an aging paladin serving the Order of the Radiant Heart. If you kicked him out of the party, examine all of Athkatla, and it should be obvious where he hangs out.

I say keep the party like it is. You'll need Yoshimo for his thief skills. Minsc makes a decent tank, and Jaheira and Aerie have priest spells. Plus, Aerie's romance is the easiest female romancable NPC, in my opinion. (Easy to romance, get those dirty thoughts out of yer head. )

If you need to drop somebody off, I suggest Valygar. Yeah, he's got a lot of depth, but if this is your first game, you need to survive it. Keldorn makes a good replacement, but there ARE a lot of NPCs out there to choose from.

This is your first game. Have fun, play around, experiment. And for the love of God, stop reading this forum! Not only will the game be more fun if you figure everything out for yourself, but you WILL get spoiled on this board, whether you were asking for it or not. I found out the hard way when I first played BG2.

My advice would be drop Aerie. I never felt any need for both Jaheira and Anomen (kind of clerical overkill,) and trust me, you will end up with plenty of magic (Imoen + Sorc) I'd say replace with Keldorn, but really up to you. Honestly, you're probably role-playing through it. Take whoever seems the coolest to you. I like Jan.

Repeat, stop reading, and start playing.

Spirits,

I have to second what Pirengle is saying. Stop reading the board and worrying about who you have on the team. Just play! You will be fine in the end with whoever you pick (as long as you have at least: a couple tanks, someone with trap detection and elimination, a person that can heal, and a wizard (you)).

While not as aggressively as you, during my first go, I worried about getting the right team together, making sure I did all the side quests of the game, and getting the good equipment. The downside of worrying about all that is that you get spoiled regarding some neat parts of the game and you lose some of the role playing. Just sit back, decide who you feel like your character is and bring in party members that work with that feeling or that you think seem interesting. You won't miss much and the upside of not getting spoiled and better role playing is worth it.

Work the boards if (most likely when) you decide to play it a second, third, fourth,... time.

The only thing I think you would look back on at the end of the game and like to have known now is: Keep Yoshimo in your party.

Possibly one other thing: If you have a good party, you'll probably prefer to have had Keldorn. But, that's not too big of a deal.

Just enjoy!
