What the.... I'm a Manshoon now? What the hell is a Manshoon?

I forgot to echo Kaz's statement that you will NEVER be able to play a Ranger/Thief. The class does not exist, and there's no reason for it to, since the Ranger class is already pretty much a Fighter/Thief/Druid anyway. A much better choice is Fighter/Thief. You get to specialize your weapons past two stars (if you Dual-Class. Multi-classes are limited to 2), and you get more Thieving points to allocate, as well as having the choice of where to put them.

(In my opinion, Ranger/Druid is a pretty lame class anyway. You get to use both sets of Priest spells, sure, but number of spells you can memorize stays the same. Much better is the Cleric/Mage. Now, a DRUID/Mage.....THAT would kick some ass.)

I'm going to be getting BG2 soon as well. They stick to AD+D rules when it comes to classes; so, any high level experience in AD+D helps with decisions in this area. I have a final save with a half elf cleric/mage. I know that high level spells really kick; plus, it must be really cool to use AND see it too, unlike AD+D. I am curently squirrel hunting my way to BG2 as a dwarven fighter. I plan to dual him to a thief sometime after level 13 (2/1 attacks). I won't know when untill I figure out what weapon slots I want and where. I really like dwarves as fighters 'cause of the 20 con. (regeneration, baby!). When I finaly dual my guy, he'll have at least 130 hps., probably more. The book will give me 18 dex. When you reach that high a level, you don't need to worry about race when it comes to thief skills 'cause eventually, you'll have more than enough points to go around. The most important difference between BG1 and BG2, and the most important reason besides being attached to your charactor to import from 1 to 2 is, the godlike stats that you can get in 1. You cannot have over 18s if you create from scratch in 2, and there are no tomnes. That 20 con. and 19 str. kick the damn door down! Unless it's trapped, that's why I'm dualing to thief. And that backattack with imp. invis. sounds game unbalancing fun too. I love BG1; but, I want power... POWER... POOOWWEEEEEEEEERRR!!!!!!!! Man I need some help.

Sounds like a plan, Telchar, except for one thing: You want to Dual-Class a DWARF? I suppose you could do it with Gatekeeper.....just get him to the level you want, turn him into a Human, Dual, then go back to Dwarf....maybe. (See below.)

I'm doing the exact same thing, except with a Human, and I'm taking him through the game twice. Once with the party, and then Solo for as long as it takes him to reach Level 13. Yeah, Regeneration kicks ass, that's why I'm giving him the Book of Constitution the second time around--but that's the only Tome that I'm giving to him twice, so he won't be TOO godlike. (Even though Godlike is exactly what he should be striving for.)

I actually tried Gatekeeper out the other night. The only thing I actually *hacked* was I re-allocated Coran's Thieving skills so he didn't have 128% in Stealth anymore. (I *DID* get him after only 9 days of game time, so I felt justified in rationalizing that he SHOULD have been at a lower level.) I also changed Imoen's appearance so that she looks like a Mage when she's in her Conjurer phase, and I made Canderous look like a Half-Elf, because Elven Clerics look so much cooler than Human ones. You can actually change your character's Race, too, not just his appearance of race, but if you ask me, this might be really asking for trouble.

Looks like your questions have been answered Mr. Tambourineman. But to restate:
1) you can only choose the multiclass option when creating the character
2) ranger-thief is not an option
3) do not select the crossbow; there is a far greater number of superior/magical bows and superior/magical arrows

If the idea of a ranger-thief appeals to you, the nearest multiclass choices are
cleric-thief (restricted to gnome only)
ranger-cleric (suggest half-elf)
fighter-thief (suggest elf)
mage-thief (suggest elf)
fighter-druid (suggest half-elf)

If you really love the thieving thing then fighter-thief, mage-thief, and cleric-thief are all good choices.

If you like the ranger thing more, then make it a ranger-cleric.

About the ranger/thief, ive never been able to do it, but some people says they dualed a ranger to thief (i cant remember if it was BG1 or BG2 though). I think its just a bug as that combination isnt supported in the multi options, so it shouldnt be possible dualing neither.

Ok, Fighter/Thief.. Dualed.
I was thinking in putting points in the short bow there...
Because I want to be a ranged guy. And also, maxing his dex will make him both a good sniper and a good thief.

But the fighter.. Would it just be pathedic to put a bow in his hands?

Only if he's your Tank.

I know in BG1, having a party of mostly range attackers works really well....but from what I hear, this isn't as common in BG2: Everyone's talking about "Which is better, this mace or that flail," and "Should I focus on sword-and-shield or Dual-Wielding?" So, my advide to you would probably be to go ahead and make your Fighter/Thief kick ass with a Bow, and then when you import him to BG2, I think you can take all his stars in Bow and move them to a melee weapon (or style of melee combat).

Yes, in Bg2 you can rearrange your abilities, including weapon proficiencies.

Well, there are so many good npc:s in bg2 that works just perfectly as tanks.
I think I will keep those points in the short bow in bg2 also..

Bows forever!!!!! Sorry, just started playing an archer - a ranger kit, you get some pretty harsh disadvantadges, but give me a bow and I am a GOD... I am going to make a "test" character to play the game with before I try my old character, it gives you a chance to plan your group instead of wildly picking up anyone who comes your way (you should SEE the group I'm stuck with in my game, it's incredible)
