When Volothamp's Comeuppance goes so far as to actually suggest that a particular spell would be useful in a certain area, it's because the area has the potential to cause a LOT of head-crashing-into-wall syndrome among newbies. If a party has the Ring of Free Action, the player won't be a newbie anymore, and their Warriors will probably make the Save anyway. Newbies are also not likely to put a Small Shield on a Tank, so the Demons are sure to claim at least 1 or 2 lives. Potions of Invulnerability are also not plentiful until late in the game (and newbies generally don't have the foresight to hoard and use them wisely), and I've never seen Potions of Free Action to carry any benefit whatsoever.
Yes, you can beat the Demons without casting Free Action. But for those who happen to blunder into the Sphere in Chapter 2, one little spell can save so much headache.

I did it in chapter 2 on my first attempt.
I dont like using potions, wands, items with charges or spells like free action - I always think Ill need the charges more desperately at a later date, and the spell is used so infrequently that it seems pointless memorising it. I took the demon on the left as you leave the sphere - thats one of the unnamed ones, yes? He wuz easy as a small rubber duckling with powers of negativity.

Have you seen any recruitable Clerics that are high enough of level to cast Free Action and actually have it memorized while you were zapped into that hellish place? ... but that would be just pointless. ![]()

(Hell, you could cast it back in BG1, even without ToSC installed.) Viconia knows it. Anomen knows it. (I think his lowest "incarnation" puts him at Cleric Level 11.) I think that even Aerie knows it. Given her eccentricities, it wouldn't surprise me if Jaheira knew it too. [ADD] But you're right, there's no real need for me to specify Free Action. And making this post also made me notice an error: My Spell Dictionary describes Free Action as being a Level *2* spell. Whoops! [/ADD] [ 05-06-2003, 09:01 PM: Message edited by: SixOfSpades ]

On the same note, you might want to mention that it would be prudent to have at least one enchanted blunt weapon and some +3 enchanted or better weapons.

Tom-Slayer: what items and wands do you have available? Also, a reminder to several posters out there, Tom-Slayer is playing a level 13 solo sorceror...
